George William Welkie's Obituary
George William Welkie, 90, a longtime resident of Logan Utah, passed away in Salt Lake City on October 31, 2022.
George was born April 11, 1932 to George and Anna Welkie in Hazleton PA. He attended Hazleton High School, graduating in 1948. At the ripe age of 16, he entered the Pennsylvania State University and received a Bachelor of Science in 1952. He completed a Master of Science degree at Penn State in 1954 and accepted a research assistantship in the Department of Plant Pathology at the University of Wisconsin.
After graduating in 1957 with a PhD from University of Wisconsin he accepted a position as an assistant professor in the Department of Botany and Plant Pathology at Utah State University where he advanced throughout his career. He excelled in virus research and had the opportunity to travel to many international conferences to share his work. He retired after 40 years in 1997.
George met the love of his life, Barbara Evelyn Chizlett in Wisconsin. They were married in 1957. George and Barbara had four children Robert, Katy, Carol and Jonathan. In Logan, Barbara and George built their family and lived and thrived in the community with the affection and support of colleagues, neighbors and friends. George lovingly tended his trees, flowers and vegetable garden. Preceding him in death are his parents George and Ana Welkie, his wife Barbara Welkie and son Jonathan Welkie. Surviving are his sister, Mary Ann Ator, and his children Robert B Welkie, Katherine A Welkie and Carol J Nielson as well as grandchildren, nieces and nephews. A family service will be held at a later date.
