Gregory James Pennington's Obituary
Gregory James Pennington, age 76, passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones on December 9th 2025 in Salt Lake City, UT.
Greg was born in Grand Island, NE on July 1st 1949 to parents James Blacklock Pennington and Shirley Joyce (Todd) Pennington.
After graduating high school, Greg joined our United States Air Force where he served as an Air Traffic Controller in Tucson, AZ for 4 years. He then made a career working for the Union Pacific Railroad as a conductor, and later Engineer, He also served as a proud Union member for the Teamsters BLET Division 349 . He retired after 41 years.
Greg was full of spirit and laughter. He was a natural for telling great jokes, his kindness, and compassion for others. His hobbies were to travel around the U.S. , especially national parks or any of the many wonders that nature provides, bicycling, rafting, hiking, 4 wheeling, and watching a good show or movie. Although he was a man that enjoyed his alone time, his joy came from his family, friends, and pets. Whether it was chatting on the phone, a visit, reunion, luncheons with family or his fellow U.P. brothers, or just hanging out, his joy lied there. Greg was solid in his morals. He was an honorable man that touched many hearts and he will be greatly missed.
Greg was predeceased by parents Jim Pennington and Shirley Pennington. He leaves behind his younger sister Ann Joyce Pennington, his children David Wayne Pennington and his wife Shawntell Pennington, Daughter Jamie Pennington, son Daniel Lewis Bernhardt and wife Jennifer Bernhardt, and daughter Toni Eileen Compton. He also leaves behind a multitude of grand and great- grandchildren.
His services will be held at Camp Williams in Bluffdale, UT. Memorial at 10:00 a.m. and burial at 11:00 a.m.
