I will always cherish the last time I spent with Grandma Helen. Even with little memories left, she was of pure love and compassion and asked me to call her Grandma as we reminded her of how she sponsored a huge family of refugees over from Cambodia in the early 1980’s. Her legacy will live on with my family.

Helen Bateman along with her husband were our heroes. May they both be reunited and Rest In Peace with our Heavenly Father. We are forever indebted and grateful to Helen and her family... for rescuing our entire family (13 refugees) from the war torn country of Cambodia by sponsoring us to the United States of America in the early 1983. We would not be here without the generosity, compassion, love and support of Grandma Helen and Grandpa LaVar.

They were there for our family every step of the way…
to ensure that we have a better life. It’s not a day that goes by that my parents are reminded of their struggles in the war… but the next sentence out of their mouth is always, “Thank God for our sponsors who saved us from all the hunger and struggles of war.”

We will always remember you and have a special place in our heart for you and your family. Thank You for all the love and support you have shown us throughout. We love you and will miss you🙏💕

I am so saddened to hear of her passing. What a wonderful woman, teacher and friend. I have many, many memories of her as my home living teacher at Provo High. Our class was the last period of the day. On one particular day she asked this question "If there was a button on your desk that you could push and have the desk turn into anything, what would it be?" We all answered in a unanimous voice, " A BED!" Thank you Mrs. Bateman for being not only our teacher but our friend.
