Hugh Meredith Collier's Obituary
Hugh Meredith Collier
1933 - 2018
Hugh Meredith Collier, of Provo, Utah, born on October 9, 1933 in Clover Bottom, Kentucky, to Mary E. Smith (Witt) and Hugh M. Collier, passed away at age 84 on August 14, 2018 at his home in Provo.
He graduated from high school at age 14 and then attended Berea College in Berea, Kentucky. He was a truck driver for both UPS and OverNite, pulling triples all over the country, from 1971 until retiring in 2000 due to the loss of vision in his left eye. He was known on the highways as “Poke Salat,” his CB handle. Retirement was not his thing, so he then worked as a food handler at Nestle until retiring again in 2007.
Hugh married Sharron Collett in 1964 in the Los Angeles L.D.S temple. They lived in California, Kentucky and Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, David E. Collier; and sister, Phyllis Witt. Hugh is survived by his sons, Robert Carlson (Miryam), John Taylor Collier (Lisa), David G. Collier (Connie), and Adam S. Collier (Kellena); daughters, Collette Bise (Troy) and Karren Collier (Brandt Carter); sister, JoAnne Davidson (Herbert), 23 grandchildren, 7 great grandchildren and multiple nieces and nephews.
Hugh had a passion for genealogy, gardening, serving his neighbors and donating blood to the American Red Cross. He was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and loved every home teaching assignment he was ever given. He was a proud member of the Sons of the American Revolution, and had a huge love of history, particularly Kentucky history. For Hugh, no one was a stranger. He could talk to anyone and loved to make people laugh with his far-fetched Kentucky stories. He hated goodbyes, so he chose to keep his illness confidential and continued to live life to the fullest.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish may donate to LDS Humanitarian Services or take the time to mow a neighbors’ lawn, roll their garbage can to the road for pickup or donate blood.
Friends and family are invited to attend the funeral services will be 11:00 am, Monday, August 20, 2018 at Lakeside 10th Ward Chapel, 2225 West 650 North, Provo, Utah. A visitation will be prior to the services at 9:30 a.m. Interment at the Orem City Cemetery.
