Jack was born on April 22, 1932, in Salt Lake City to Roy Miller Pickrell and Wanda Robison. He was preceded in death by his parents and younger sister, Trenna Pickrell Malone, who recently passed away.
Jack grew up in Salt Lake City and attended South High School, graduating in 1949. As a youth, he developed a love for tennis that remained with him throughout his life. He cherished the friendships made through tennis, neighbors, co-workers and his Charlton Avenue childhood friends.
As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Jack served in the Texas-Louisiana mission and liked being the mission secretary. As a child, he lost hearing in his right ear due to a severe ear infection. This experience influenced his academic pursuits, and he graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in speech pathology and audiology. He enjoyed his rotations at Primary Children’s Hospital.
Jack began his career in sales at General Cable before accepting a position at Church headquarters as the coordinator of the newly developed meetinghouse library program. In that role, he helped establish church libraries throughout the United States and Europe. President Thomas S. Monson affectionately referred to Jack as “Mr Meetinghouse Library”. Following his retirement from the Church, he enjoyed working as a driver for the Utah Auto Auction, making many friends. He also served for several years as a temple worker in the Bountiful Utah temple.
Jack married Darlene Ashby in 1959, and together they became the parents of three children. They later divorced. He subsequently married Ann Richins; they also later divorced. Throughout his life, Jack lived in Midvale, East Millcreek and Centerville, Utah. He is survived by children: John (Melinda) Pickrell, Diane (Scott) Brown and Scott (Erin) Pickrell; nine grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth, Jacob, Anna Catherine, Joshua (Bernadette), M’kenna (Tevyn), Dallin, Ethan, Aiden, Keaton and three great-grandchildren.
The family expresses appreciation to Annette Goodsell and her family for many years of friendship and kindness to Jack. They also extend sincere thanks to Coventry Senior Living and to Madi and staff from Inspiration Hospice for their compassionate care.
