I have many memories of Janice and her family when they came to Provo in between assignments around the world. We got to know her kids, especially the older ones. We had fun times swimming, having picnics and exploring BYU. The Shields and the Nelson’s both had 9 kids. We had 6 boys and 3 girls . And they had 6 girls and 3 boys. We heard about many of the different places they lived and the great adventures they were experiencing.
Then later in life, I got to visit with Janice and Jan when they moved to Pleasant Grove and we lived in Lehi. On one of our last visits with her, my husband Doug and I helped her look at some family pictures on Family Search . She told us some interesting stories about her loved ones. I was interested in hearing again about how her parents, Maxine and Sandy eloped when they got married.
She lived a great life and we will miss her.

As I sat next to her in her last moments, there were many visitors. Jay Shields, her beloved brother and one of her heroes. She spoke on the phone with to her sister, Shauna Jo Wenger. Her three sons, Paul Jan Nelson, Erik Glen Nelson and Jared Christian Nelson were with her in her last hours. Her daughters were caught together on a distant outing and were not able to make it back. They all video chatted with her and offered final well wishes. She was a great mother, and provided safety and security for many decades to her large family. We will miss you, mom!
