Joel "Joe" Gomez's Obituary
Joel “Joe” Gomez entered this world on October 11, 1939, and made his departure back home on February 27, 2026.
We could list his accomplishments and everything he did in his lifetime, but what matters most is who he was.
Joe was a devoted husband of 60 years to Dora “Dodie” Gomez. They fell in love dancing, and that joy remained their special bond until time and age made dancing no longer possible. Their love, however, never slowed.
He was an incredible father to his only daughter, Jodie, and a patient, loving stepfather to his sons Mitch, Darrel, and Greg. Family was the center of his life, whether by blood or by choice.
Joe found joy in movement, connection, and music. He loved golfing, basketball, bowling, dancing, and singing. Also, the thrill of a good gamble. Though, his deepest appreciation surrounded music.
He was an honorable and dedicated worker, serving in government work for 25 years, and was a lifelong fan of mathematics. Though accomplished, he remained a simple man—not your average “average Joe.”
He broke generational chains of physical violence and grew up first generation as both English and Mexican American. He enlisted in the Navy and was stationed in Pearl Harbor, though he never cared for war, guns, or violence. While he could argue politics fiercely at times, his favorite weapon was always the truth.
Beneath strong opinions—sometimes sharpened by inebriated debate—was a gentle soul. Joe did not wish harm on anyone. He wished the world were softer. He could never understand how, in stories of murder, the spouse was often the culprit; his heart simply could not conceive such betrayal. His heart was large, even if he never fully learned how to express it with words.
His love language was acts of service. Those closest to him knew just how precious and loving he was. He deeply loved his grandchildren and found great joy in the presence of his great-grandchildren.
In his later years, Joe lived with progressive muscular atrophy. Yet throughout his life, he modeled acceptance, integrity, chivalry, honesty, endurance, and devotion. These are the gifts he leaves behind.
His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the values he embodied, and the quiet love he gave so freely.
