John (Jack) Nelson Stewart's Obituary
It is with great sadness the family of John (Jack) Nelson Stewart announces his passing on Nov 4, 2018 at the age of 82. Jack was born Jan 4, 1936 in Shelby, South Dakota to Roy Stewart & Thelma Gidley. Survived by his daughters Stephanie Stewart & Alison (Bill) Harris, his brother Jim (Marsha) Stewart, his 4 grandchildren Cole, Stewart, Mia & Peter & several nieces & nephews. Jack was born & raised in S. Dakota in a family of athletes, endlessly playing sports with his two older brothers. He lettered in numerous sports in high school & continued with baseball & basketball throughout college. He earned a master’s degree in Physical Education from the University of S. Dakota. Jack then served in the US Army before going onto a career coaching men's basketball. He was the head basketball coach for several championship high school teams in S. Dakota & Nebraska. He then became the head basketball coach at Peru State College in Nebraska before eventually settling his family in Salt Lake City, UT to become the head basketball coach for Westminster College. Jack ended his career coaching professional teams overseas in Venezuela & Qatar. Jack's championship wins & coaching awards are too numerous to list. In retirement, he spent countless hours as beloved “Papa” to his 4 grandchildren. We will remember Jack fondly for his positive outlook on life, witty sense of humor, love of animals, gardening, sports, coffee & all things sweet. He will be dearly missed.
