John Paul Ottens' Obituary
Our beloved father, grandfather and friend John Paul Ottens passed away peacefully after a sudden diagnosis of Stage 4 Merkel Cell Carcinoma on July 4th, 2023, at the age of 82.
John was born on March 2nd, 1941. John met the love of his life of 60 years, Joyce Nielsen, in High School. He proposed to Joyce at her Senior Prom, and they were married July 5th, 1963. John and Joyce had 4 children Jim, Chris, Carol, and Carl, before moving to Orem Utah to their forever home in 1971. John worked for Orem City for 25 years before retiring and spending his time volunteering at the Orem Senior Friendship Center for the next 25 years, collecting guns, watching the news, playing the flute, woodworking, and visiting elementary schools all over Utah to present as a Fancy Hat Mountain Man.
John loved spending time with his family. As a man of many talents, he loved helping his children and grandchildren with various projects. He was always working on cars, renovating homes, buying and fixing guns and bullets, and hauling furniture around in his trailer. He was a very giving and selfless person.
John is survived by his forever wife Joyce, His son Jim (Jennifer) Ottens, Son Chris (Gilma) Ottens, Daughter Carol Maughan, and Son Carl (Katie) Ottens. As well as 21 grandkids and spouses, and 9 great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Mary (Dan) Reagan. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Charlie, as well as many friends and loved ones.
Funeral services will be held at the Orem Senior Friendship Center (93 N 400 E Orem, Utah) with a viewing prior to the service from 12:30-2:00 PM and a program from 2:00-4:00 PM.
