John Barry Sherwin, 84, of Pensacola, FL, passed away on June 17, 2025. John was born on July 24, 1940, in New York City, to the late John Edward and Alice Harris Sherwin. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in October 1958 and was released from active duty in August 1964. He joined the reserves and civilian life before returning to active duty in December 1966. He continued to serve until his retirement in January 1991, achieving the rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant. John served in the Vietnam War, from December 1966 to January 1968 with the 3rd Battalion, 4th Marines. During the course of his career in the Corps, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, Presidential Unit Citation, Combat Action Ribbon, Meritorious Unit Citation and Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry. He was preceded in death by his wife, Leeann Sherwin, his parents, and his siblings, Beth Petracca, Gail Lee, and Robert Sherwin. He is survived by his children, John (Cortney) Sherwin of Blackstone, MA and Jennifer (Bruce) James of South Jordan, UT; his six grandchildren, Braxton Sherwin, Sarah Sherwin, Emily Sherwin, Spencer James, Matthew James, and Emmarsyn James; and several nieces and nephews including James Michael Lee.
A memorial service will be held at the Utah Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park, in Bluffdale, UT on June 25th at 10:00 AM.
