John Kools Winter's Obituary
John Kools Winter, Jr. passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of June 13, 2025, at his home in Park City, Utah. He was 86.
Born in Holland, Michigan, to Dr. John Winter and Sadie Grace Masselink, John graduated from the University of Illinois School of Architecture. Although trained as an architect, his career ultimately led him to the financial world, where he worked as a floor broker, commodities and institutional trader.
John had a lifelong love for the mountains and golf, but skiing was his true passion. Alta Ski Area held a special place in his heart, and he often shared vivid stories from his early ski days in Vail, Colorado, during the 1970s. Remarkably, he continued skiing until the age of 83.
A man of intelligence and wit, John was known for his dry sense of humor, his thoughtful presence, and the pride he took in maintaining his home. He was a devoted husband and a caring father.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine Leer Winter; his daughter, Alice Elizabeth Winter; and his grandson, Avery Chaplin. He was preceded in death by his son, John Winter III, who died tragically at the age of 26, and his brother, James Winter.
A memorial service will be held at the family home in Park City. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (alz.org).
