Joshua Zane Mefford's Obituary
It is with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joshua Zane Mefford on October 12, 2023, surrounded by many family and friends. Joshua was born May 12, 2002 to Aaron & Norma Mefford in Orem, Utah, the 4th of 5 children.
Joshua usually went by Josh, but at times had the nicknames JZ, Spider, Heshua, and Joshy. His favorite quote was "The world is yours," from his favorite movie, Scarface. He was very smart and talented, and his best talents shined in how he related to others.
Josh was very loyal, especially to his family. He was always the peacemaker from a young age. He was especially loyal to his mom. He loved her cooking, from enchiladas to haystacks to pineapple upside down cake and monkey bread. He would do anything to protect his mom and would have endured 1000 years of pain if it would bring back his mother’s sight.
Josh was courageous. He loved to play football and basketball. He endured watching Halloween-themed movies with family each October. He was a bit too fearless as a driver. Shooting and collecting guns was a favorite hobby. Needles were his biggest fear, yet he faced that fear to let his brother, Alex, tattoo his fingers.
Alex and Josh were inseparable. As children they played and fought together. Too gentle, Josh would not really fight back even if Alex deserved it. He made fast friends with all, and didn’t like anyone who upset Alex. At times Alex envied Josh as he so easily became the life of the party.
Josh had a gentle heart. Always willing to share his time with little kids, Joshua would give them the attention they crave. Fiercely protective, he watched over his little sister Colette. He was so proud of her school accomplishments. If anyone were to hurt her, they were in jeopardy of his wrath. When she was very low, he encouraged her that she could get through it because she shared his blood.
Josh was actively searching to find a connection with God. Josh had developed a personal relationship with Christ. He was frustrated at God for taking his mother’s eyesight but believed deeply in Jesus and his love. He was very jealous of Alex being named after Alexander the Great and sharing a birthday with the same. This lasted until he learned that the etymology of Joshua was related to the name Jesus.
We are thankful for the precious time we had with Joshua, and we know God has big plans for Josh on the other side. Recently Joshua had been remembering his late grandmother Emilia and felt she was watching over him. We are comforted to know that she was there to receive him. Joshua was preceded in death by his grandparents Emilia and Antonio Cuevas. He leaves behind his parents Aaron and Norma, his 4 siblings, Isaac, Isabelle, Alexander & Colette, his brother-in-law Cody Ward, his much-loved nephew & niece Dustin & Kali, his grandparents David & Laurine Mefford, and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.
Internment with a graveside service will be at the Spanish Fork Cemetery on October 25th at 11 AM, followed by a celebration of life at The Manor at the Riverwoods in Provo at 12:30 PM. Pall Bearers will be Alex Mefford, Aaron Mefford, Kevin Arias, Kobe Bennet, Nate Arias, Isaac Mefford, Abner Arellano, Cody Ward and honorary Dustin Ward.
