Katherine Zollinger Meyers Nielsen's Obituary
KATHERINE ZOLLINGER MEYERS NIELSEN
Kathie passed away quietly in her sleep Saturday, November 13, 2021 at home in Orem, Utah. She was 95 years old.
Born May 6, 1926 in North Salem, Idaho, she was the youngest of ten children of Albert Zollinger Jr. and Marie Graf. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers, and sisters: Paul G., Marie, Mark G., Gertrude Bush, Margaret, Arnold G., Frank G., George G., and Albert G. She was especially close to her one sister that survived past infancy, Gertrude. Kathie was also preceded in death by her first husband, Guy C. Meyers; son, Guy A. Meyers; granddaughter, Meagan Jackson; grandson, Stephen Mason; granddaughter, Noelle Tomco; and grandson, Lee Littlejohn.
Kathie attended Hibbard Elementary School and Madison High School in Rexburg, Idaho. She graduated in May 1944 from East High School in Salt Lake City, Utah. Her nurses training at LDS Hospital was interrupted when she accepted the call to serve as a missionary in the Northern States Mission. She served in Muncie, Indiana and Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was in Grand Rapids that she met Guy C. Meyers. They courted via correspondence. They were married in August 1948.
Kathie always wanted to be the mother of a large family. Guy and Kathie have ten children: Rose, Kathy Trefethen, Karen (Clark) Jackson, Dot (Bob) Tomco, Marsha (John) Hoyt, Debra (Kevin) Soelberg, Gay (Michael) Kelly, Guy Albert (Linda), David (Mindy), and Robert (Diana). She spent many hours working with her children, reading to them, assisting with homework, teaching them homemaking skills, and taking them to various activities.
Her top priority was supporting Guy in all his sailing adventures, running his printing business, and his callings in the church that he so faithfully filled. She sewed the sails for the little dinghy that they built. One adventure entails selling a typewriter from the business and taking the whole family to Long Beach for a vacation. She was the accountant for the printing businesses. She worked there bringing children with her to be by her side. Kathie would pull out the sewing machine and create seven identical outfits for her daughters for special occasions. Her support for Guy in his various callings required that she sit alone with the ten children in the pew at church for more than half their marriage. She also supported him by making sure he had his dinner before rushing out to Bishopric meetings.
After sharing her life with Guy for 25 years, he died scuba diving, leaving her with eight children still at home. Kathie went to work earning her real estate license and worked for several years at a local brokerage. Those years were hard, working and raising a family on her own. But through all of it she was a loving, devoted mother and grandmother.
In the fall of 1979, Kathie married M. Gail Nielsen, a local businessman and father of five children: Art, Gaylene (Gary) Carlson, Leslie, Bert, and Diane (John) Kimber. Adding new children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and recently a great-great-grandchild to encourage and love.
Throughout most of her life, she would slip a $5 bill into a birthday card for every descendent. These were cherished because not only did they represent her love, but also the sacrifice of money from Gail and Kathie to continue that tradition into their late years. Their shared hobby was their plentiful garden harvests that they would preserve as much as they could from it every season.
Besides loving and caring for her own family, Kathie served faithfully in many church callings including Primary teacher, Counselor in Primary Presidency, Primary President, and as a Primary General Board Member. She also served as Secretary in Ward and Stake Relief Societies. She and Gail served as temple workers for many years. Her love of the gospel showed through her devotion. Always the stenographer, she took notes on every meeting she attended. In her later years, Kathie loved to read church publications and books. She also loved to read cookbooks and collect new recipes as a hobby.
No public funeral is planned. A family viewing is scheduled for Wednesday evening.
Graveside service will be held before internment Friday, November 19, 2021 in Kirkland, Washington.
