Leana Deane Powell's Obituary
Leana Deane Powell, 80, passed away on January 13th, 2022, at her home with her adoring husband by her side. She was the loving wife of David Lyman Powell. Despite being a decade older than David they shared 49 years of marriage together and were together until the very end. Showing that their love has no age nor bounds.
She was born in Inglewood but grew up in idyllic Avalon, Santa Catalina, California, the daughter of Diana and LeRoy Butler. She graduated from Mira Costa High School. She won spelling bees and had fantastic penmanship. She often worked to provide for the family (telephone operator, medical transcriptionist, receptionist, etc.), but spent most of her life as a homemaker and mother to 5 grateful children.
Though, she tried out many religions and churches throughout her full life and had a very diverse understanding of life, love, and the universe, she died affiliated with none. She was a believer in love and kindness who might be described as a hopeful agnostic.
Her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren brought her tremendous joy. She may have been most happy in life while holding babies and small children on her lap.
If anything brought her more joy, then it may have been while in her gardens. She was a prolific horticulturist and Master Gardener. To say that she had a green thumb was a massive understatement. She spent many hours volunteering to help clean up parks, neighbor’s yards, neighborhoods and anywhere where life could grow out of the soil. Her gardens were always a celebration of color and an intense diversity of plant life due to her immense knowledge of all things growing from Mother Earth.
She also had a great love and appreciation for animals. There was never a time that she didn’t have birds, cats and or dogs around her and the family. When there wasn’t a baby around, she would have her dog Holly in her lap.
She is survived by her husband David, her children Elaine, Kristine (Drew), Rob (Sage), Tim (Heather), Ryan (Sarah), her grandchildren Jade, Max, Amanda (Patrick), Rachel (Robert), Zach (Hannah), Nick, Kalmy (Jeremy), James, Mia, Forest, Alexander and River and great grandchildren Caden, Wesley, Jeremiah, Cielo, Santiago, & Francisco.
There will be no services held, but a Celebration of Life at a later date. If you wish to honor Leana then go plant some flowers, kiss a baby, adopt an animal, and or hug someone close very tightly.
