Leland Paul Dopp's Obituary
Leland “Paul” Dopp (May 26, 1942 – January 2, 2024) was born to Leland Moroni and Adelia Elenor (Stonebreaker) Dopp in Ogden, Utah. He was the youngest of three sisters, all preceding him in death: Barbara, Darlene, and Nancy. He missed his family, spoke fondly of them, and looked forward to being reunited.
He played the trombone and bass guitar as a boy, joking that the bass was bigger than he was at the time. He studied recreation management and outdoor education, first at Weber State University then earning a Masters degree from Brigham Young University. His careers included Buck Sergeant in the United States Air Force, Letter Carrier for the USPS, Senior District Executive at the Boy Scouts of America Teton Peaks Council, small business owner, CPR/First Aid instructor, and teacher for Landmark High School where he worked with troubled Youth. Paul and his wife also welcomed foster children into their home for many years. In nearly all of his careers, Paul was a tireless mentor for youth as he taught with genuine care and concern. He was accepting and supportive of others and made a difference to those he served in all capacities of his life.
He was a scholar of the scriptures, gospel doctrine, and family history. Among his other many hobbies were history, astronomy, photography, art, and camping. He loved his Scottish ancestry and proudly served a mission to Edinburgh, Scotland, from 1961 to 1963. He loved the country as his own, returning for a long-awaited visit in recent years with some of his family. Family was his top priority, and he always made time for his children and grandchildren. He consistently shared his humor and love of all things corny. He was the king of dad jokes and always said it was his mission in life to make others laugh, especially his wife LeeAnn.
He was a great man and patriarch who knew and lived the gospel by precept and example. He was known for emulating his Savior, Jesus Christ, by choosing compassionate love and service over criticism, complaint, or judgment. His family honors his life and memory, by striving to follow in his footsteps.
He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 57 years, LeeAnn (Mikkelsen), their six children: Vickie (Jason) France, Mike (Janice) Dopp, Debbie Dopp, Diane Dopp, David (Annette)Dopp, and Amy (Anthony) Weah, 18 grandchildren, more than 50 foster children, and his faithful pet companion, Peaches.
A funeral is planned for January 8th at 11:00 a.m., preceded by a viewing from 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. These services are to be held at 131 South, 1600 West St. in Provo, UT.
In lieu of flowers, donations to assist with funeral expenses would be greatly appreciated.
