Lola Astle Carling Savage's Obituary
Together Again!
Lola Astle Carling Savage passed away peacefully in the early morning hours of July 7, 2024 at the age of 96. She and Dad are joyfully dancing to their favorite music in heaven.
Mom was born on May 7, 1928 to George Isaac and Clara Pearl Astle Carling in Logan, Utah. She was the oldest living of ten children. She grew up on a farm in Providence, Utah, where she learned how to garden and preserve their many fruits and vegetables and sew all her clothes. Her family learned how to be very self-sufficient and she practiced those talents throughout her life. She graduated from South Cache High School which, ironically, was right next door to Dad's house in Hyrum.
Mom met our dad, Dee Lon Savage, on a blind date. They fell in love and got married on May 25, 1951 in the Logan LDS Temple. They recently celebrated 72 years of marriage before Dad passed away on July 31, 2023. They were apart less than a year.
During their lifetime they lived in Ely, Nevada; Downey, Idaho; Kearns, Utah; Garland, Utah and for the last 59 years they resided in Sunset, Utah.
Mom had many talents. Her gift of sewing has blessed many. She made her family's clothes, made custom drapes and her biggest passion was quilts, which she entered and won blue ribbons in county fairs. Three of her quilts were accepted and sold at Mormon Handicraft in Salt Lake City, Utah. She made each of her grandchildren a quilt and several baby blankets.
Mom had a beautiful flower garden and loved roses. She had the chance to name a rose for Jackson-Perkins Roses. She named two of the roses after her oldest granddaughters, Calli and Tara.
Later in life mom worked at Fremont Elementary in the school lunch program. Here, she acquired a variety of recipes which her family still enjoys.
Mom and Dad went on two missions after retirement, one to the Philippines and one to Colorado. They loved their mission experiences. When they came home from their missions, they served 15 years in the Ogden LDS Temple before it closed for remodeling. They met and made many lifetime friends.
Mom loved to have family get-togethers in her backyard. We had potluck and sat in the shade on the patio, a tradition we hope to continue.
She is survived by her eight children, Larry D (Marilyn) Savage, Wade R (Cynthia) Savage, Carol Savage, Carma Savage, Delene (A.J.) Christiansen, Wendy (James) Aurich, Cindy (Robert) Peterson, and Blair (Ally) Savage. She has 18 grandchildren and numerous great- and great-great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Lee Carling, her sister, Eva Carling Johnston, Eva's husband, James Johnston, and her sister-in-law, Nola Carling.
She was preceded in death by her dear husband Dee, brothers Dean, Ivan, Darold, Blaine, Ray, and Grant Carling, her sister Linda Carling Johnson, many wonderful in-laws, a daughter-in-law Ronda (Jenkins) Savage, and a grandson Matthew Lew Savage, all who she loved dearly.
Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to our sisters, Carol and Carma Savage, for their unfailing love and excellent care of our parents for the last 7 years. We will be forever grateful for these extra bonus years we had with our parents because of their sacrifice.
