Manuel Vegas Gutti's Obituary
South Salt Lake, UT- On April 23, 2026, Manuel Vegas, our dear husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, age 89, passed away at his home after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
Manuel was born on November 29, 1936, in Peru to Manuel Cañote Vegas and Rosa Granados Gutti. He graduated from high school and attended some college in Peru. Before coming to the United States in the late 1960s, he served in the army in Peru.
He married the love of his life almost 53 years ago in the Mesa, Arizona temple on May 23, 1973. They had one son.
Manuel loved learning. After coming to the United States, he attended the LDS Business College to continue to learn English, and was an eager lifelong learner. He was fluent in Spanish, Castellano, Italian, and English. He found great satisfaction when teaching and translating. He translated for new immigrants when they arrived in the United States, and also helped the missionaries with translation when they needed it. He worked many years at the Alta Club and the Joseph Smith Memorial building as a chef.
He was a devoted husband and father and found happiness and satisfaction when in service to his family as well as many others who benefited from his loving heart and testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. Manuel’s greatest joy was when he was serving others. His favorite calling was serving as the president of the Sunday School. He was also a temple worker for about 2 ½ years. He loved being active and played soccer in Peru when he was younger. He liked doing yard work and fixing stuff around the house, and liked trains.
Manuel is preceded in death by his mother and father. He is survived by his loving wife, Lupita, his son, Manny, his brother Carlos (Magda), and his niece and nephew. Manuel was a humble, kind, and righteous man, and he will be greatly missed by all of us.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 2, 2026, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2702 South Main Street, South Salt Lake, UT 84115, at 12:00 noon, with a viewing the same day from 9:30-11:30 am.
Internment will be at Elysian Burial Gardens, 1075 East 4580 South, Millcreek, UT 84117.
Thanks to the loving, compassionate care and support of the Huntsman Cancer Institute and the kind, patient, loving care of the many professionals at CNS Hospice.
