Mary Rowena Thomas Nielson
1919 - 2018
Mary Rowena Thomas Nielson, 98 years old, of Orem, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and sister, has valiantly returned to her Heavenly Father, July 5, 2018. Valedictorian of Payson High School and graduated Magna Cum Laude from LDS Business College. Worked as Executive Secretary USS Geneva Works prior to raising her family. Was a member of the Orem Women’s Club, where she served as President, member of the Daughter of the Utah Pioneers (DUP) where she served as lesson instructor for 16 years, due to blindness would memorize lessons and give verbatim, member of Yesharah (sister missionaries) and member of the Orem Literary Club.
She was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, where she served in many callings, including Relief Society President. Served two missions in England, with her husband, where she served as Executive Secretary to both mission presidents. Served as a temple worker for many years.
She was born in Leland (Spanish Fork) Utah, December 21, 1919. Daughter of Frank and Leona Thomas. Married Garth Barron Nielson August 22, 1938 in the Manti LDS Temple.
Survived by five of her six children, Lynda (James) Meldrum Provo, UT, Diane Christensen Redlands, CA, Jacque Mae Nielson Orem, UT, Thomas Kris (Babette) Nielson Layton, UT, Geoffrey Barron (Denise) Nielson Sandy, UT, Sister-in-Law, Marva Thomas Bountiful, UT. Has 18 Grandchildren, 31 Great-grandchildren, 2 Great-great-grandchildren
Proceeded in death by husband Garth Barron Nielson, son Garth Barron Nielson, parents Frank Sanford and Leona Deon Bates Thomas, siblings, Paul Frank (Lena) Thomas, Alta (Claude) Sickelsteele, Perry Bates (Elaine) Thomas, Lester Larson Thomas and Son-in-law David Thomas Christensen.
Services will be held 11:00 am, Thursday, July 12, 2018, at the Hillcrest LDS 4th Ward Chapel, 440 East 800 South, Orem, UT with a viewing prior to services from 9:45 to 10:45 am. Interment in the Orem City Cemetery.
