Melanie Slater Munns' Obituary
Melanie Slater Munns, 42, of Herriman, Utah, passed away, peacefully on August 13, 2024 in the comfort of her home, surrounded by family.
Melanie was born on April 23, 1982, in Mesa, Arizona to Robert and Linda Slater. She joined an older brother, Steve and sister, Marianne. Soon another brother Greg was born and finally Michelle. Melanie and her family moved to the Holladay, Utah area when she was 5 years old. Melanie graduated from Olympus High School and went on to attend Weber State University and Utah Valley University. While attending college Melanie auditioned to become a Young Performing Missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Nauvoo, Illinois. She was chosen and became one of 16 full-time YPM's during the summer of 2001. It was there in Nauvoo she met Nick Munns who was also serving as a Young Performing Missionary. They fell in love and were married on December 27, 2001 in the Salt Lake City Temple. Together they had 4 children Ashley Elaine (18), Wyatt Nicholas (16), Crawford William (14) and Lauren Melanie (11). Motherhood was Melanie’s crowning achievement. She adored and nurtured her children and taught them how to live with joy and faith. She especially loved attending their performances and activities and being a listening ear for them.
In 2015, Nick was paralyzed in a snowmobile accident and Melanie was by his side daily as he spent 5 weeks recovering in the hospital. Melanie and Nick's love deepened as they relied on each other during this major trial. Melanie didn’t skip a beat. She hiked and skied with the kids. She assisted Nick with their business and was an amazing companion. She had a deep abiding love for her extended family including cousins and nieces and nephews and always loved a good road trip to visit family in Arizona and Idaho.
Melanie was known throughout her life for her beautiful voice, a talent which she shared willingly and often. She was a bright light to all who knew her. She was an amazing friend and loved and cared for her friends.
In July, 2022, Melanie was diagnosed with bile duct cancer (metastatic cholangiocarcinoma). She faced this diagnosis with the same faith and resilience as other trials in life. She was so grateful for the compassionate Healthcare providers she encountered. She would often return home after a grueling day of chemotherapy or radiation and share her experience with a kind nurse or doctor who brightened her day. Her parents Rob and Linda Slater were by her side at every doctor appointment and she felt so loved and cared for through their support. She was often undergoing multiple treatments at a time and did everything she possibly could to fight this cancer with the sole purpose of having more time with her family. She lived life to the fullest even while fighting cancer.
Melanie is survived by her husband, Nick and their 4 children, Ashley, Wyatt, Crawford, and Lauren. Her parents Robert and Linda (Smith) Slater, brothers Steve Slater (Carole), Greg Slater (Sara), sisters Marianne LeSueur (Steve), and Michelle Airhart (Jamey), her parents in law, Doug and Debbie Munns and Nick’s siblings Maja Lusk (Byron), Bart Munns, Lyndi Smith (Joshua), and Joshua Munns (Camie) and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
