Melvin Clyde Orchard II
On Tuesday February 12, 2019, Melvin C. Orchard II, husband, father, brother, and friend passed away at the age of 75. Mel was born to Melvin C. Orchard and Jeanne L. Carr on July 21, 1943 in San Diego, California. He was many things to many people and loved by all.
Mel was known for his adventurous spirit, his uncanny sense of humor and his love of music. He loved to make people laugh and was an incredible story teller. Mel’s love of the outdoors was infectious. He was an avid mountaineer, climber, skier (water and snow), surfer, and outdoorsman. He loved his family, and he loved the little things, his treasures and the nuances of life. He loved to travel and was always searching for the next adventure.
Mel was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served many callings, served a 2½ year mission to Brazil in the early 1960’s, was Ward Mission Leader, High Counselor in the San Francisco West Stake, Gospel Doctrine Teacher of Half Moon Bay Ward, and an avid Boys Scout supporter who had earned his own Eagle Scout Award. He married Regina B. J. Wiehle on October 15, 1983 in Salt Lake City and on June 1, 1988 were sealed for time and eternity in the Mesa Arizona Temple.
Mel served in the US Army National Guard from 1961 to 1967 preparing to be deployed into the Berlin Crisis in Germany. He received his medical training in the 144th EVAC Hospital, Fort Leonard Wood, MO. During his time in the service he had the opportunity to use his great singing voice in the Fifth U.S. Army Entertainment Contest. His vocal group Fort Leonard Wood’s “Overland Trio” took first prize in the contest.
Mel will be forever remembered by his wife and best friend, Regina, his children, Melvin, Mary, Monica and Barbara, grandchildren, Liam, Katie, Owen, Kristina, Oliver, and Braxton, sisters, Catherine and Rebecca, brother, David, and many friends. His life will be celebrated on Saturday February 16, 2019 at the Sugarhouse Ward building 1621 South 1100 East SLC, UT, at 11:00 am with family time half hour prior.
