I was fortunate to be visiting in Orem when Miguel Saavedra-Varela was celebrating his 100th birthday. He enthusiastically welcomed me to stand by him as our photos were taken--he, the great-grandfather on the Saavedra-Varela side of the family and me, the grandfather on the Rust side of the Richard/Pilar Rust family. My Spanish is limited to "no abla Espanol", but we found a common bond in handshakes and smiles which were always present when I was around him. A vital cross-cultural link that bonds families from very different backgrounds.
