Nadine Hoem Meyer's Obituary
Nadine Hoem Meyer, 83, of Spanish Fork, Utah, passed from this mortal life Tuesday, July 30, 2024, at Legacy House Assisted Living in Spanish Fork, UT. We’re grateful dementia no longer has a hold of her once brilliant mind. She was born July 28, 1941, in San Francisco, CA. She married William Arthur Meyer on July 25, 1964, in the Los Angeles, CA L.D.S. Temple. They were married close to 55 years before Bill’s passing in 2018. They later settled in Fremont, CA.
Nadine is survived by her daughters Jenny (Austin) Martineau and Julie (Casey) Beard; Sister, Deann Stacy; Brother, Robert Hoem; grandchildren Andrew Martineau, Nathan Martineau, Addison Beard, and many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Nadine was a devoted mother to her family and friends and was loved and adored by all who knew her.
She grew up in Oakland, CA until she was 13, when her family moved into the Glenmoor area in Fremont, CA. She attended Centerville Jr. High and later graduated from Washington Union High School in Fremont, CA in 1959. She enjoyed being part of the Glee Club while in school and remained involved as part of the Class Reunion Committee for many years afterwards.
Nadine attended Brigham Young University to study Elementary Education and graduated in May 1963. She taught elementary children for 35 years, everything from art and music to first through fourth grades. The last 15 years were spent in kindergarten where she left her heart when she retired from Fremont Unified School District in 2000. That same year she was named Fremont’s Teacher of the Year and also received the Mentor Teacher Award for Fremont Unified School District. During her time as a teacher, she wrote a book, “The Joys of Kindergarten Journals,” as a help for other teachers and had it published. She loved doing anything to help children and made it her life’s passion to help them succeed.
Nadine was a cancer survivor. She developed plasmacytoma (a very rare form of cancer) just above her right eye that was treatable with radiation. After 25 radiation treatments, she was cancer-free.
After her retirement, she and Bill moved to Spanish Fork, Utah to be closer to their family. She became a volunteer for the daughters of the Utah Pioneers, helping type up pioneer histories. She volunteered at her grandson’s elementary school and just enjoyed being a grandma.
Nadine had many talents and hobbies. She played the piano and guitar and shared her talent as a primary pianist or as the organist as part of her church callings in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She discovered her love and talent for painting, tole painting, and drawing. She illustrated many of the materials she used in her classroom and even helped design her school’s mascot logos. She was an avid reader who enjoyed sharing her love of books with others. She sewed a lot of her own clothing and made beautiful quilts. She did needlework, cross-stitch, and crochet work. She was mostly known for her knitting, which she enjoyed up until her death.
She and Bill loved to travel. Together they enjoyed traveling to Puerto Vallarta after Bill had won a trip there. Her favorite vacation spot was Yosemite National Park. Other favorite places to visit included Big Basin Redwoods State Park, Hawaii, Disneyland, Washington D.C, an Alaskan Cruise, Disney World, and The Whale Watch Inn near Gualala, CA.
