Nancy Eloise Wiscombe Oldham's Obituary
Nancy Eloise Wiscombe Oldham
January 10, 1932 – July 14, 2017
Nancy Eloise Wiscombe Oldham, 85, passed away Friday, July 14, 2017, due to complications incident to age. At her passing she was a resident of the Bel Aire Care Center, Orem, Utah.
Nancy was born January 10, 1932, at Provo, Utah, to Leonard E. Newland and Louise Evans Wiscombe. She was the youngest of four children.
Nancy’s father worked for the City of Provo as an electrical engineer. When she was one year old, her family moved to Salt Lake City. She graduated from South High in Salt Lake City, in 1949, at age 17.
After high school, she worked for a short time at the Governor’s Mansion as a maid and nanny. Next, she worked in the offices of the Utah Highway Patrol for a couple of years, and then started working at Geneva Steel Works in Utah County. In 1952, while working at Geneva, she met a handsome, young man, who also was employed at Geneva, by the name of Lynn Oldham. They dated that year and were married in the Salt Lake City Temple, Friday, December 19, 1952. Nancy continued to work at Geneva Steel while her husband finished school at Brigham Young University. Lynn and Nancy were then off to New York City where Lynn attended New York University.
After school in New York, Lynn worked for the J. C. Penney Company, and that position took the family to Logan, Utah; Murray, Utah; Casper, Wyoming; Denver, Colorado and Mapleton, Utah. In 1972, Lynn was transferred to Orem, Utah, where he helped manage a J. C. Penney store under construction at the new Orem University Mall. It was during this time, Lynn and Nancy decided to open their own store in the same University Mall. Their initial store was a 4200-square foot franchise gift store, Hatch’s Gift Shop. Hatch’s opened March 7, 1973. Later, the Hatch’s franchise was replaced with Lynn and Nancy’s own gift shop, Cloud Nine Gifts.
In 1973, Lynn, Nancy and their family consisting of six children (Kathy, Tom, Debbie, Peggy, Doug, and Jim) moved from Denver, Colorado to Mapleton, Utah, where they built a beautiful home on two and one-half acres of land. The family raised much of their own food on that little farm – meat, eggs, milk, vegetables, etc. In March 1993, Lynn and Nancy closed Cloud Nine Gifts and retired – a hard decision to make.
Nancy was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Throughout her life, Nancy served in a variety of callings within the church. In 1994, Lynn and Nancy were called to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to the Japan Sendai Mission. Their time in Japan allowed them to enjoy some of the most memorable experiences of their lives.
Nancy was preceded in death by her husband, Lynn; parents; sister, Lucille Wiscombe Harmer; brothers, Keith and Paul Wiscombe.
Nancy is survived by six children, Kathy Oldham Edmunds (Frank), Tom Oldham (Patti), Debbie Oldham Clement (Steve), Peggy Oldham Park, Doug Oldham (Karri) and Jim Oldham (Shoni); 35 grandchildren and 133 great-grandchildren.
Services will be held at 11:00 am Monday, July 31, 2017, at Canyon View Stake Center, 575 East 800 North, Orem, Utah. There will be a viewing from 10:00-10:45 am prior to the services.
Nancy will be interred next to her beloved husband, Lynn, at Utah Veterans Cemetery and Memorial Park at Camp Williams, Bluffdale, Utah.
The family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the Bel Aire Care Center and Canyon Hospice for the excellent care provided Nancy, and to Premier Funeral Services.
