Nelly Elizabeth Fernandez Johnston's Obituary
Nelly Elizabeth Fernandez Johnston passed away Saturday, November 28th of complications associated with lung cancer. She died peacefully at home in Millcreek surrounded by her family. Nelly was born March 29, 1955, the seventh of eight children born to Benjamin and Juana Fernandez in Paramonga, Peru. Nelly graduated from high school at age 15 and moved to Lima with her family. She graduated from a two year bilingual secretary program and begin working in the travel industry. This led to meeting Sonia Ramirez, who introduced Nelly, Betty, and their mother to the LDS church. Following baptism Nelly moved to Venezuela where she worked in various office jobs, interrupted by an LDS mission to Maracaibo, Venezuela at the age of 26. She immigrated to Utah in 1985 to pursue additional education and married the love of her life on July 11, 1987 in the Salt Lake Temple. Further education included earning a paralegal certificate at Westminster college, licensure as a real estate agent, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah in Spanish Teaching. Nelly taught Spanish many years at East High in Salt Lake City.
She loved this country and the opportunities it gave her and her children which she felt were not available to ordinary people in Peru or Venezuela. Nelly had an astonishing range of close friends from different countries, languages, beliefs, ages, and backgrounds. She loved her family, church, international travel, her book groups, hosting large dinner parties, sponsoring college scholarships, perfecting her English, investing in real estate, and inviting family and friends to live with us. She was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer early in 2019 and courageously and optimistically continued to live life to the fullest.
Preceded in death by her parents, sister Rosemary, and brothers Wilson, Veder, and Eduardo. Nelly is survived by her husband Jeffrey, children Jeffrey, Carla (Daniel), Paul (Dru), grandchildren Charlotte and Thomas, brothers Antonio (Yolanda), Luzgardo (Blanca), sister Betty (Steve), sister-in-law Mercedes Fernandez and many nieces and nephews. Due to COVID restrictions live attendance at her funeral is limited to immediate family members. There will be two virtual events on Saturday December 5th commemorating the life of Nelly - a funeral service broadcast and a memorial service hosted on Zoom. See details at the bottom of this page.
Nelly Elizabeth Fernandez Johnston falleció el sábado 28 de noviembre por complicaciones asociadas con el cáncer de pulmón. Murió en paz en su casa de Millcreek rodeada de su familia. Nelly nació el 29 de marzo de 1955, la séptima de ocho hijos de Benjamín y Juana Fernández en Paramonga, Perú. Nelly se graduó de la escuela secundaria a los 15 años y se mudó a Lima con su familia. Se graduó de un programa de secretaria bilingüe de dos años y comenzó a trabajar en la industria de viajes. Nelly enseñó español durante muchos años en East High en Salt Lake City.
Amaba este país y las oportunidades que le brindaba a ella y a sus hijos, que sentía que no estaban disponibles para la gente común en Perú o Venezuela. Nelly tenía una asombrosa variedad de amigos cercanos de diferentes países, idiomas, creencias, edades y orígenes. Le encantaban los viajes internacionales, sus grupos de lectura, organizar grandes cenas, patrocinar becas universitarias, perfeccionar su inglés, invertir en bienes raíces, invitar a familiares y amigos a vivir con nosotros, su familia y la iglesia. Fue diagnosticada con cáncer de pulmón en etapa 4 a principios de 2019 y con valentía y optimismo continuó viviendo la vida al máximo.
Le precedieron en la muerte sus padres, hermana Rosemary y los hermanos Wilson, Veder y Eduardo. A Nelly le sobreviven su esposo Jeffrey, sus hijos Jeffrey, Carla (Daniel), Paul (Dru), sus nietos Charlotte y Thomas, los hermanos Antonio (Yolanda), Luzgardo (Blanca), hermana Betty (Steve), cuñada Mercedes Fernandez y muchas sobrinas y sobrinos. Debido a las restricciones de Covid, la asistencia en vivo a su funeral se limita a miembros de la familia inmediata. Los servicios se llevarán a cabo en la capilla LDS en 4350 S 1100 East. El entierro será en Elysian Gardens en 1075 E 4580 South después del funeral. Se invita a amigos y familiares a participar en el servicio funerario a través del seminario web Go-to-web a la 1 pm el sábado 5 de diciembre y asistir a una hora de memoria en Zoom a las 7 pm el mismo día.
