Norman Wilson Showalter's Obituary
Norman Wilson Showalter, 94, of Sandy, Utah, passed away peacefully at his home on October 6, 2023, surrounded by family. Norm was born October 21, 1928, in Buhl, Idaho, to Mildred Ann Wilson and Paul Henry Showalter. He was raised in Buhl on the family homestead in the Snake River Valley and later moved to Twin Falls where he graduated from Twin Falls High School in 1946. He married Barbara Fay White on October 3, 1948, and they celebrated their 75th anniversary three days before his passing. Norman worked with his dad at the Bohemian Brewery distributorship until he enlisted in the Air Force with his friends to avoid the draft. He studied Russian cryptology in the service. After the Air Force, he and Barbara moved to Utah where he attended Brigham Young University. Through a part-time job at Allen’s Photo in Provo, Norman met Ron Inkley and was offered the opportunity to manage his own photography store in Pocatello, Idaho. They raised two children, Eric and Lisa, over more than sixty years in Pocatello. Norm and Barb loved to snow ski and water ski. They always had a boat and spent the summers at Seagull Bay, Stanley Lake, and Palisades Reservoir. Norman retired from the Inkley corporation as Vice President of the Idaho stores. Norman and Barbara loved to travel. They went to Asia, Europe, Africa, South America, and all across the United States. When they weren’t traveling, Norm loved to play golf, collect rare cameras, and serve in the Idaho Falls Temple with Barbara. Barb and Norm spent their winters near Lake Havasu where they could play golf until the snow melted in Pocatello.
Norman was preceded in death by his brother Robert Duane, and is survived by his wife Barbara, sister Victoria Redford, son Eric (Joan), daughter Lisa (Mark) Rockwell, grandchildren Matt (Julia) Showalter, Jenny Showalter, Norman Rockwell, Olivia Rockwell, and great-grandchildren Ivy and Eli Showalter. The family would like to thank Harmony Home Health & Hospice for the excellent care they have provided over the past year. Thank you, Jamie, Shannon, and Shauna, for the love and care you provided for Dad.
A graveside service for family and friends will be held on Friday, October 13, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the Sunset Memorial Cemetery in Twin Falls, Idaho.
