Patricia (Patt) Jean Havens Asplund passed away peacefully on Friday, January 19, 2024, at the age of 93 in Orem, Utah. She is survived by her eight children: Curtis (Mary), Virginia Waldram (Ken), Leila Scurr (Mark), Liisa Roden (Bruce), Kirsti Ringger (Eric), John (Jennifer), Nicole (Jarl), Ila Renee; 23 grandchildren and 32 great grandchildren.
Patt was born on November 10, 1930, to Ila Vivian Paulson Havens and Harold Curtis Havens in Lewisville, Idaho and grew up in Salmon, Idaho. She had three sisters and one brother, each so dear to her. After High School, she earned a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Arts Instruction at Brigham Young University.
After BYU, she was called to serve a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Helsinki, Finland. She learned to love the language, culture, and people of Finland—and she found her future eternal companion who was also serving a mission there.
Soon after their missions, John Malcolm Asplund of Alberta, Canada, and Patricia were married in the Idaho Falls temple. For the next few years, they started their family and Malcolm continued his education. In 1963, with four children and a new PhD, Malcolm and Patt were called to serve as mission presidents to the Helsinki Finland Mission. That service was a highlight and they felt connected to Finland for the rest of their lives. When they came home from their mission, Malcolm accepted a position at the University of Missouri and they settled in Columbia, Missouri where they raised their family.
After retirement they served another mission to the Swedish Temple. They moved back to Salmon, Idaho and enjoyed many years living near Patt’s family. Eventually they moved to Orem, Utah, where Malcolm passed away in 2018.
Everywhere Patt went, she found ways to serve and to include others. She was ever studying, learning, and working. She loved beauty and was an artist and calligrapher. As a devoted friend and a mother of 8 children, she certainly spent her life in the service of others. Patt was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. This belief has been the North Star of her life.
There will be a service to commemorate her life on Saturday, February 3, 2024, at 1:00 PM at the chapel at: 80 West 900 South in Orem, Utah 84058. Friends and family are invited to come and celebrate the life of our beloved mother, grandmother, and friend.
