Pauline Kay Hurst's Obituary
Pauline Kay Hurst
1944 - 2017
Pauline Kay Hurst, age 72, our beloved daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt and friend passed away on Sunday morning April 9, 2017 in Provo, Utah surrounded by family. Kay was born in Glendale, California on July 27, 1944 to Harold C. Reno and Elsie Marie Dodge.
Kay grew up in California in a large blended family with many siblings. Their mother Elsie always sacrificed to teach her children about Jesus Christ and his Gospel. As a teenager she lived with Marvin and Twila Hayman and their family where she was still able to remain active in the church as they were a strong LDS family.
Kay attended Brigham Young University between 1963-1965. She regretted not obtaining her college degree and would like to have done so even in her later years. She married Nobuyuki M Motokawa in Riverside, California in 1965 and began a family with two sons. After their divorce, she married Esteban A. Sotuyo in 1969 in Reno, Nevada and had seven more children. They lived in Riverside until moving to Orem, Utah in 1977. After the marriage ended in divorce, Kay later moved to Dallas, Texas and married Timothy Allen Hurst. Together they moved the family to a small farm in Omaha, Boone County, Arkansas and soon divorced. Kay and her children found peace, adventures and many lifelong friends living in the beautiful Ozark Mountains. She worked for the United States Postal Service in California and Missouri for many years until she retired. Kay was also an energetic entrepreneur who created and sold eucalyptus oil.
In addition to working to support her family, Kay always reached out to all those around her. Over the years she selflessly extended refuge in her home to many who had temporarily lost their way. She befriended, helped and visited many women in her church who lived in outlying areas. Regardless of what life brought her she always had an unfailing faith in Jesus Christ and his Gospel and never hesitated to share her testimony with others. In her later years she felt an urgency and passion for doing her family's genealogy.
Many who knew Kay will remember her fun sense of humor, her laugh and her zest for party planning and cooking. She had a great talent for making occasions fun. Even with limited resources she never failed to share her passion for life with her children and often took them on great adventures with only shoestring budgets.
Kay lived, worked, attended church and served in the Boone County Ozark community for 31 years until returning to Utah due to health reasons to live with her daughter Adrienne.
Kay is survived by her nine children Benjamin (Sharise), Michael, Stephanie Casto (Ted), Alicia Broussard (Steve), Jared, Matthew, Adrienne Jaynes (Ryan), Kari Atkins (David), Julienne Duncan (Mark), her siblings Harlow, Marie, Sylvia, Margaret, Lynn, Kathryn, Anna, Phillip, Doris, Nancy, Sally, and twenty-seven grandchildren. She was predeceased by her parents and four siblings: Harry, Robert, Jay, and Molly.
Funeral services will be Wednesday April 12, 2017 at 10:00 am at the LDS Chapel 2801 W. 620 N. Provo, Utah. Friends and family are invited to the viewing between at 8:45-9:45am. Interment will follow the funeral services at the Provo City Cemetery.
“True disciples of Jesus Christ are willing to stand out, speak up, and be different from the people of the world.
They are undaunted, devoted, and courageous.”
Russell M. Nelson
