Pedro Leoncio Puertas Rojas' Obituary
With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Pedro Leoncio Puertas Rojas, who peacefully left this life at his home in Provo, Utah, on August 28, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was 83 years old.
Pedro was born on May 13, 1942, in Uchumarca, La Libertad, Peru, the oldest of twelve children born to Germán Puertas Polo and Petronila Sagástegui. A good student with a love of learning, Pedro graduated with a degree in Mathematics and dedicated his career to teaching as a professor. He was known for his patience, kindness, and skill in the classroom. His love for math never faded, he often woke up early in the morning just to work on problems, finding joy in every solution.
On August 5, 1965, Pedro married the love of his life, Rolanda Jimenez Lozada, and together they built a family centered on faith, sacrifice, and love. Years later, they were sealed in the Jordan River Temple for time and all eternity, a sacred covenant that reflected Pedro’s devotion to his family and to God.
Pedro’s life was transformed when his cousin Teófilo Puertas introduced him to the missionaries of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His baptism changed the course of his family forever. A pioneer in the growth of the Church in Piura, Peru, Pedro was called to serve as the district president, and stake president there. With unwavering faith, he and his family sacrificed much so he could serve others. His legacy of leadership and discipleship continues to inspire generations.
To his siblings, he was Leoncio; to his beloved grandchildren, he was “Che Che”, a nickname he earned for dancing and singing with them, filling their lives with joy. He was famous for making his mother’s delicious cachangas and ucho for family gatherings, where laughter, love, and good food always filled the home.
Above all, Pedro's greatest joy was his family. He cherished every one of his children, but he shared a particularly special bond with his daughter Jessica, her husband Pita, and their children Kristofer, Kimberly, Jeremiah, and Joshua, who lived with their grandparents and gave them immense love and joy throughout the years.
Pedro was preceded in death by his parents, Germán and Petronila; his brother Jorge; his sisters Zarela, Alicia, Enma, Teófila and Blanca Teresa; and his beloved daughter Jackeline. He is survived by his siblings Nicanor, Segundo, Luisa, Teresa, Javier, Filiberto and Graciela.
He is survived by his eternal companion of 60 years, Rolanda; his children James (Angela), Raphael (Eliana), Kenny (Lylly), Jessica (Pita), Wilford (Rayanna), Howard (Anna), and Steve (Hillary); his 31 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren, and currently has 4 grandchildren serving as missionaries in South America. His posterity is his greatest legacy.
A celebration of Pedro’s life will be held on Saturday, September 6, 2025, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2876 West 1390 North, Provo, UT 84601. A viewing will be held from 9:00–10:00 a.m., with funeral services to follow at 11:00 a.m. A Zoom link will also be provided for those who would like to join virtually.

Con el corazón lleno de pesar, anunciamos el fallecimiento de Pedro Leoncio Puertas Rojas, quien partió pacíficamente de esta vida en su hogar en Provo, Utah, el 28 de agosto de 2025, rodeado de su familia. El tenía 83 años.
Pedro nació el 13 de mayo de 1942 en Uchumarca, La Libertad, Perú, siendo el mayor de doce hijos de Germán Puertas Polo y Petronila Sagástegui. Fue un buen estudiante con un gran amor por el aprendizaje, se graduó con el título de Profesor de Matemáticas y dedicó su vida profesional a enseñar. Y era reconocido por su paciencia, amabilidad y habilidad en la enseñanza. Su amor por las matemáticas nunca desapareció, se levantaba temprano en la mañana para resolver problemas matemáticos, encontrando alegría en cada solución.
El 5 de agosto de 1965, Pedro se casó con el amor de su vida, Rolanda Jimenez Lozada, y juntos construyeron una familia centrada en la fe, el sacrificio y el amor. Años después, fueron sellados en el Templo de Jordan River por el tiempo y la eternidad, un convenio sagrado que refleja la devoción de Pedro a su familia y a Dios.
La vida de Pedro cambió para siempre cuando su primo Teófilo Puertas le presentó a los misioneros de La Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días. Su bautismo transformó el rumbo de su vida y de toda su familia. Fue pionero en el crecimiento de la Iglesia en Piura, Perú, donde fue llamado como el primer presidente de distrito y presidente de estaca. Con su fe inquebrantable, él y su familia sacrificaron mucho para que pudieran servir a los demás. Su legado de liderazgo y discipulado sigue inspirando a generaciones.
Para sus hermanos, era conocido como Leoncio; para sus nietos, era cariñosamente “Che Che”, apodo que se ganó por cantar y bailar con ellos, llenando sus vidas de alegría. Era famoso por preparar las deliciosas cachangas y ucho que le enseno a su madre, y a el le gustaba mucho compartir eso con toda la familia, y sus seres queridos.
Por encima de todo, la mayor alegría de Pedro era su familia. Valoraba profundamente a todos sus hijos, pero tenía un vínculo especial con su hija Jessica, su esposo Pita, y sus hijos Kristofer, Kimberly, Jeremiah y Joshua, quienes vivieron con sus abuelos y ellos les brindaron mucho amor y alegría durante tantos años.

También le sobreviven su eterna compañera de 60 años, Rolanda; sus hijos James (Angela), Raphael (Eliana), Kenny (Lylly), Jessica (Pita), Wilford (Rayanna), Howard (Anna) y Steve (Hillary); sus 31 nietos, 8 bisnietos, y actualmente tiene 4 nietos sirviendo como misioneros en Sudamérica. Su posteridad es su mayor legado.
La celebración de la vida de Pedro se llevará a cabo el sábado 6 de septiembre de 2025, en la Iglesia de Jesucristo de los Santos de los Últimos Días, 2876 West 1390 North, Provo, UT 84601.
