In Loving Memory of Penita Wallace Burgess aka Benny
With heavy hearts and deep love, we announce the passing of Penita Wallace Burgess, lovingly known as “Benny,” who departed this life on July 24, 2026, at the age of 44.
Benny was born on August 10, 1981, in Vaitoloa, Apia, Samoa, to Fepuali Ete and Zelda Burgess. He was the fifth of nine sons and two daughters, raised with the values of family, faith, respect, and perseverance—values that would continue to guide him throughout his life.
At just one year old, Benny’s mother, along with Benny and four of his brothers at the time, made the journey to America in search of greater opportunities. The family settled in Salt Lake City, Utah, where Benny grew up surrounded by his siblings and began building the foundation of the life and legacy he would leave behind.
Benny attended Parkview Elementary School and later continued his education at Glendale Middle School, where his life took a meaningful turn when he met Carolyn Tuupo—the love of his life and the mother of his children. Their journey together began at a young age, and they went on to share 22 years together, building a family and creating countless memories. Through their union, Benny was blessed with nine children who became his greatest pride and joy. Although their paths eventually changed and they separated, the love they shared and the family they created remained one of Benny’s greatest blessings.
From a young age, Benny understood the importance of hard work and responsibility. He expressed his love through one of his greatest gifts—cooking. With even the simplest ingredients, Benny had the ability to create a full-course meal and bring people together through food. His cooking was one of the many ways he showed love and care for those around him.
Benny had a natural ability to make people smile. Whether through his endless jokes, playful personality, or simply his presence, he had a way of bringing laughter and joy to those fortunate enough to know him.
Music was a special part of Benny’s life. He loved to faikava, gather with family and friends, and enjoy all types of music. At just 18 years old, Benny shared his musical talents by playing backup keyboard for his family band, creating memories.
Above all, Benny was a devoted father and grandfather. He loved his children deeply and took great pride in being a father. His heart was filled with even more joy when he became a grandfather to his seven grandchildren, whom he loved dearly.
Benny’s greatest legacy will be the love he poured into his family. He taught through his actions, showing the importance of caring for one another, creating memories, staying connected, and always making time for the people who mattered most.
Benny is survived by his children: Jelani Burgess (Seini), Cypres Burgess (Moni), Kikiana Burgess, Sophie Burgess, and Charlene Burgess; his seven grandchildren; his parents, his eight brothers and two sisters; extended family; and many friends who were blessed to know and love him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved children: daughter Alazia, who was born prematurely; son Bruce, who passed away at two months old; son Tayvonn, who passed away at the age of 24; and his grandparents on both his maternal and paternal sides.
Although our hearts are broken by Benny’s passing, we find comfort knowing that the love he gave, the laughter he shared, and the memories he created will continue to live on through everyone fortunate enough to have known him.
Benny’s life was a blessing, his memory a treasure, and his love a gift that will forever remain with us. He will be greatly missed.
