What a wonderful life Ralph had! I always enjoyed my visits with him whenever I went to Utah. We talked about family. And music. And we tried to solve the world's problems. He was wise, gentle, and kind. I loved him and will miss him.
When Ralph and Jan lived in Chicago they were out place to celebrate Thanksgiving. For 20 years we drove to Chicago to enjoy several days of family fun. Jan always planned a wonderful meal and we looked forward to receiving Ralph's call early in the fall inviting us. Ralph often took us downtown Chicago to museums and other attractions in the area. We missed the opportunity to be with them when Ralph retired and they moved to Huntsville.
My grandfather was the best person I knew! He taught me about dedication and work ethic & always reminded me to stay kind. As a young child, my grandparents dedicated many years of their lives to raise my brother and I. I am beyond spoiled with beautiful memories… my brother & I bringing him lunch in the red wagon as he would water the trees. Sitting at the dining room table, teaching me how to read and spell. As a little girl, I used to always complain when my grandmother would do my hair. My grandfather used to always remind me how he wished he had hair as long and thick as mine to protect his “ cold, bald head”, I remember once a mean dog was chasing my brother and I down the lane, my grandfather came out of nowhere, like a knight and shining armor on the back porch with a BB gun, Needless to say the dog no longer chased us. once when we were young we all went on vacation … well my brother, and I decided it was a good idea to take the camp rowboat and surprise my grandfather, with how many fish we could catch. I believe that was the only time I ever saw my grandfather upset, as we surprised him with many many dead fish… It was my first real lesson my grandfather taught us on the value of life. I remember my grandfather taking me to the hardware store to buy everything to finish the playhouse. Waiting for what felt like an eternity for him to lay the grass carpet. I remember watching him contact the music in church And oh man do I am remember how good my grandpas spaghetti was…it made around my mouth burn in the best possible way. I spent many years watching my grandfather, nurture and care for his beautiful Huntsville property. Countless and countless nights sitting on the swingset, watching the sun, go down in the west singing hymns. The property that gave me a safe haven as a child and as a an adult, my grandfather built a serenity & strength inside of me that I will be able to cherish for the rest of my life. I love you, Grandpa I love you so much! Thank you for showing this world what beauty truly means. Thank you for giving me the strength i need everyday to conquer my own demons. You are the best man I have ever known and I truly do hope that my sons grow to be like you and I truly cannot wait until we meet again. Peter & I love you, Grandpa. ❤️❤️❤️
