Raymond Heber Moon's Obituary
Raymond Heber Moon, 85, of Orem, Utah died peacefully at home on August 11, 2019 of natural causes. He was born 15 November 1933 in Hanna, Utah to Robert Henry Moon and VaLera Duke Moon. Ray grew up in the Uintah Basin farming, raising sheep, and running track. He graduated from Tabiona High School with seven other classmates in 1951.
Ray joined the U.S. Army in 1953. He advanced from a Private to Sergeant during his two years of active service. He was officially released several years later in 1961 from the 144th Regiment out of Fort Lewis, Washington.
After his active military service, Ray served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1955 to 1957 in the Southern States. Upon his return, Ray earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Education & Office Management from Brigham Young University in 1961.
Ray spent two summers during his college years working in the Tetons, which is where he met the love of his life, Donna Diane Watson. They married 15 November 1961 in the Logan Utah Temple and have shared 58 amazing years together.
Professionally, Ray chose a 25-year career in the banking industry, working his way up to one of seven Vice Presidents for Western Savings in Arizona. He also spent 10 years teaching and developing curriculum at Arizona State University.
While Ray took his professional life seriously, the greatest legacy he left was his willingness and diligence in serving his church and community. Ray spent countless hours serving for the Kiwanis Club, United Way, Chamber of Commerce, his church, and the Boy Scouts of America. Ask almost any boy scout between 1986-2000 from Mesa, Arizona if they learned how to tie a knot by building a 20-foot signal tower from pine poles. We can thank Ray Moon for creating brilliant and powerful ways of teaching preparedness through fun and practical exercises. Ray earned many awards within the scouting community, including Silver Beaver, but more importantly, he served alongside hundreds of other incredible people, who had a similar passion of teaching youth critical life skills and encouraging them to be responsible adults.
Ray served twice as a bishop in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and three times on the High Counsel in three stakes. He had the opportunity to serve a full-time mission with his wife in Hong Kong from 2005-2007. Together they traveled to eighteen countries in Asia, auditing financial records for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Ray continued to serve as a church auditor for several additional years, auditing financial transactions both stateside and abroad for almost five years. He also served some part-time missions in Arizona on a cattle ranch and managing various church service operations.
Ray is survived by his wife Donna of Orem, two sons and two daughters; Todd Moon (Cherie), Blanding, Utah; Diana Johnson (Derek) Austin, Texas; Rob Moon of Lindon; Colleen Sorensen (Ken) Salem, Utah; eleven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; four sisters; Carma Fabrizio (Neil) Bountiful, Utah; Gwen Taylor (Hyde) Provo, Utah; Ilene Harward (Brian) Payson, Utah; one brother David Moon (Jane) Elk Ridge, Utah. He was preceded in death by his parents; three siblings, Carol Moon, Doyle Moon (Carolyn) Craig, Colorado; Donna Massey (Val) Vernal, Utah.
A viewing will be held 23 August 2019 Friday morning prior to the services at the Sharon Stake Center, 545 South 800 East Orem, UT from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Funeral will begin at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at the Orem City Cemetery.
