Rebecca Ruth Helms' Obituary
Rebecca “Becky” Ruth Morrow Helms grew up in northeastern New Mexico, on the family ranch in Trinchera Pass, New Mexico. Becky treasured her childhood and the experiences she had growing up on the ranch. She had many fond memories of her daddy herding cattle and singing Irish ballads as he walked to the barn to milk the cows.
Later, in Colorado, she attended St. Scholastica Catholic boarding school in Canyon City, Colorado, where she made life-long friends. She continued her education at New Mexico A & M College in Las Cruces, New Mexico and Keller Business School in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After schooling, she worked for Mountain Bell in New Mexico for three years before moving to Salt Lake City, Utah, where she worked at the Salt Lake County Treasurer’s Office in the Tax Abatement department for thirty years.
On June 13, 1953, she married Wesley John Helms in Folsom, New Mexico. Her faith and family were of the utmost importance in her life. She was a devout Catholic and an active parishioner of St. Ambrose Catholic Church, where in her later years she had many fun times participating in St. Ambrose social and charitable organization, the 49ers. Becky enjoyed researching and collecting her family’s history and delighted in travel abroad, especially in visiting Ireland, to see for herself the Morrow family’s origin. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many. She took great pride in her three children and will be missed and always remembered with love by them.
She was preceded in death by her husband, parents John Morrow Jr. and Dorothy M. Trumble Morrow, brothers, John Francis Morrow, Thomas J. Morrow and sister, Patricia Ellen Morrow.
She is survived by her children, Sharon Helms (Ron Coulam) of Portland, Oregon, David (Heather) Helms of Corvallis, Oregon, Shauna (Hank) Erkenbeck of Seattle, Washington, and her sister, Abbie Jane Morrow Reaves of Trinchera, New Mexico as well as five beloved grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Becky will be remembered as a dedicated mother, and a strong, independent, and fun loving woman. She had a profound impact on the lives of all her friends and family, and will be deeply missed.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, April 18, 2017 at the St Ambrose Catholic Church, E 2315 Redondo Ave S, Salt Lake City, UT 84108. Interment will follow at the Mount Calvary Cemetery.
