Rebecca Sampson Turner's Obituary
Rebecca S. Turner (Becky) passed peacefully on Saturday August 6, 2022, with many loved ones by her side, after enduring a long battle of health challenges. Becky was born in Salt Lake City, Utah, May 29, 1945, to Maxine Fitch and Gerald Elijah Sampson.
She was born fourth, in a family of five. She grew with her siblings on their family chicken farm, located on the sand hills above Draper, Utah. She attended Crescent Elementary School, Crescent, Utah, Mt. Jordan Junior High, Sandy, Utah, then graduated from Jordan High School, in Sandy in 1963. She was active in all school activities and during her Senior year was elected, Student Body Vice President. An exceptional student, Becky received many academic awards among which was the Sterling Scholar Award for Math (which is publicly awarded to encourage excellence in scholarship, leadership, and citizenship in high school students). She made many friends, and everyone knew if you were friends with Becky, you were friends for life. She was kind to everyone and had a way of making others feel important. She had a love of horses and rode as a youngster, on her Palomino colored Quarter Horse, named Welcome, competing in barrel racing competitions in rodeos around the state. Later, she was crowned 1st Attendant at Lehi Rodeo, and the next year crowned Queen in the Salt Lake County Sherriff Posse Rodeo, which today is called Days of 47 Rodeo.
She pursued her education with one year at Dixie State College and a year at BYU Hawaii. She began her career as an accountant for Murray First Thrift and Loan. Because of her work ethic, developed in her youth, and an uncanny memory for figures, she excelled rapidly to become Controller of 3 Branches.
She married Barney H. Turner on September 11, 1967 and had three children. They settled in Sandy, Utah, but soon moved to Highland, Utah, and were later divorced. She has 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
She was a fun mom, she loved sports and you can bet every basketball season, she was keeping track of all the college teams. She loved participating in golf, softball, racquetball, and skiing. When she was younger, she loved to plan parties. she loved entertaining others, many were invited to come and eat great food, listen to her stories, and laugh. She also loved surprises. She always had beautiful yards and loved working in flower beds. She was a great listener and great confidant. Friends could be assured their trust would never be betrayed.
She is survived by her four children, Stacey Belnap (Scott), Herbert H.Turner (Krista), Gary S.Turner and David Turner (Shana), her 12 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, sisters, Arva Dumas (Doug), Joni LaComb Dowd (Lance), Janine Walkenhorst (Greg) and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brother and sister-in-law, Paul, and Vicki Sampson, brother(s)-in-law Douglas Dumas, Keith LaComb and nephew(s) Michael Douglas Dumas, Jeffrey Keith LaComb, where there is certainly a grand reunion being enjoyed.
