Reggie and I go way back..."like two flats on a Cadillac"! He represents my first social connection with a person with Down syndrome and because we shared so much social space over the years, we developed a unique lifelong brother-sister connection. I could literally fill a book with memories that were made over the course of fifty years, in the weeks since his passing my mind has been on automatic replay thinking of moments with Reggie.
If Reggie had a "Top ten list" of his favorite people, I'd like to think I was on it! How it warmed my heart to watch him produce the rote spelling of my name and find it among his papers. He's certainly on mine! It was my experiences with Reggie that made me focus on a degree in Speech Pathology/Audiology when I sought a profession. It was because of Reggie, that there is a singular space in my heart for people with special needs.
I am looking forward to a heavenly reunion with my brother-in-love, I'll spend these days apart just fantasizing about it, imagining all the words we'll exchange in the world brand new, no more death, no more deficits. In the meantime, I want to thank God for planting me in the same garden with Reggie who was always pure joy. Rest In Peace, My Brother.
