Mary Ann & family,

My deepest condolences on Dick's passing. I remember well when Dick had an assignment in London and brought the whole family with him. This was at the same time I was serving a mission there close to 50 years ago. At that time, I remembered Dick seeing my my companion, Elder Frank Begay from Crystal New Mexico. Dick went up to him and began speaking to him in Navajo. Something Elder Begay least expected but was very pleased to hear. Remembering that experience always brings a smile to my face. Dick had the ability to put everyone at ease with his quiet manner and keen observation skills.

His picture here reminds me so much of his mom, my aunt Great Aunt, Edith Gee. Though I don't see much of your family anymore, please know that my thoughts of your family are always warm and joyful.

Richard and I are first cousins, his father, Platte, is my father, Karl's older brother, sons of Albert R. & Lell Perkins Lyman. We grew up in San Juan County in a farming environment. Richard helped on our farms - my Dad always said he was the best worker we ever had. Richard is two years my senior and taught me many things including how to pole vault, shine shoes with horse hair brush and many carpenter skills. He was a good athlete and played varsity ball at Monticello High School. He is very innovative and highly skilled not only in farming and carpentry, but also in math and other technical subjects, making him a highly sought employee for major companies. He used to ride his bike over 30 miles each way to work and back in greater Salt Lake City. He is also a musician, teaching himself to play a variety of instruments professionally. He is an alumnus of Monticello High School, Class of '52 and beloved by all "Buckaroos" who knew him back in the day! My Patricia who passed to Paradise in 2017, joins me in extending our sympathy to Richard's family as they mourn his passing.

Although I’ve only known Richard for the last six years, he and Mary Ann were always accepting of me as their home teacher/ministering brother. Once he learned I had served a Spanish speaking mission many years ago, not a time went by that he didn’t say something in Spanish to me. The fact that they kept up their language study by reading the scriptures together in Spanish is just amazing to me. Wish we could be there for the services, but we are doing what he would still be doing, serving a mission. Hope to see you again my Friend. Steve and Barbara Shaw
