I met Rod through my wife, who worked with Karin at a dental office back in 2003. As we became acquainted, I found him to be friendly and young at heart. My favorite memory was from an informal visit to their home. Exploring their backyard for the first time, I found a handful of large logs with an ax nearby. I asked his permission to take a few swings, and he smiled like I made his day. I don't remember his exact words, but essentially he said, "Have at it!"
I chopped for about 10 minutes as my wife chatted with Karin and Rod. When I finished halving the log, Rod congratulated and thanked me. He joked that he could take it easy while I cut his wood for him from then on. He said I was welcome to cut his wood any time, and I knew he meant it. The best part is I knew he took pleasure in providing something I enjoyed, and was not truly concerned how it would be convenient for him.
