Ron was a man I loved and respected from the moment I met him. He was as knowledgeable a man about Millcreek (the stream) as anyone I have ever known. He was on the board of directors for the White Ditch irrigation company for many years. My dad served as president of the company for a number of years and that is where I met him. After my dad passed, I became the president of the company and enjoyed a bunch of years with Ron as an adviser and still member of the board. He gave that up just a couple of years ago but was still very much involved with what has been going on with the ditch. I remember, several times, sitting in his house talking ditch and stream issues. I loved hearing his stories about "the old days"! He was always involved in any project the ditch had going on and was an incredible worker (especially for a man in his late 80's). He taught me many thing that will live with me for the rest of my days. Not all of those lessons were water related but he did love that water! To his dear family, I don't know that I have ever met any of you but know that I will be grieving with you! We have lost a gem to the other side and he will be missed! I lived down the street from Ron at 2060 Evergreen. Ron is 2 years older, but quickly became my best friend when I became a 7th grader at Olympus Jr. High. Ron was my mentor teaching me chess, ping pong, several board and card games, and camping skills. My favorite among many memories is a Monday morning when we were about to hike up Mill Creek Canyon (our personal playground). My mother insisted on seeing what we had in our backpacks. Our appeals were rejected and we opened our packs. “You have enough food for a week”, she said. We acknowledged that that is the plan, “Oh no, you can’t be that long. I need your help Saturday morning to irrigate the orchard. Keep track of time and bring the water with you” she said. Ron assured her we would do that and that he knew exactly how to divert the creek and get the water to cross the flume and on its way down Evergreen. Such were the woes of 2 boys ages 11 and 13 and parents who worried less about young sons on their own. Happy times are unforgettable. I’ll see you in Heaven my dear friend. Paul Sheffield.
