Russell Stewart Thompson's Obituary
Russell Stewart Thompson, age 84, passed away peacefully in his home surrounded by family on Monday, April 19, 2021 in West Valley City, Utah.
Russell was born in Salt Lake City on June 24, 1936 to Floyd C. Thompson and Ellen Caroline Williams Thompson.
Russell was raised in Salt Lake City where he attended and graduated from West High School. Russell joined the Airforce in 1955 and was stationed in Biloxi Mississippi where he was trained as radio technician to work on B52’s and B47’s. He later transferred to Castle Airforce Base in Merced, California where he met the love of his life Patricia Rose Crandall. They were married and sealed in the SLC temple and recently celebrated 63 years of marriage. After being released from the Airforce after 4 years of service, Russell and Patricia moved back to SLC where they planned to raise their family. Russell worked at Hercules in the mixing department that made the rocket propellant for military uses and space shuttle launches. He retired from Hercules in 1996 and committed his time to serving the LDS church and very much enjoyed being the Bishop of the Granger 10th ward. This is also the time genealogy became a hobby and a passion. Russell was best known for his delicious homemade holiday chocolates and toffee which family and friends looked forward to every year. He was admired for his wood working talents, his fun loving personality and sarcastic wit. He was a gentle giant with an infectious laugh, and will be extremely missed.
The family would like to thank Valeo Home and hospice for the excellent care of Russell. They provided great comfort to the family as well.
Russell is survived by his wife, Patricia R. Thompson. Four children, Brian K. Thompson, Russell Paul (Kim) Thompson, Bradley S. Thompson, and Melinda D. (Cory) Cooper. Six grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his Father and Mother, Sister Harriet, Brother-in-law Julie, Brother Floyd and Sister-in-law Bonnie.
