Shirley Marie Spencer Berteaux's Obituary
Shirley Marie Spencer Berteaux passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026, at the age of 76.
Shirley was born on June 26, 1949, to Selmer and Ruth Rockstad. She grew up in Puyallup, Washington, with her siblings, Siver and Katherine. Later in life, she was lovingly adopted by Harley and Virginia Spencer, who became an important part of her life and family.
As a young woman, Shirley faithfully served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Spokane, Washington. Her testimony of Jesus Christ remained the foundation of her life. She loved her Savior deeply and held tightly to her faith through every season of life.
In August 1974, she married Charles Harry Berteaux III. She had nine children with her husband. Charlie passed away in 2010, and she spent the next 16 years excelling at the role of Gramma to her grandchildren.
Shirley was a woman of remarkable creativity and many talents. She found joy in quilting, sewing, embroidery, cross-stitch, and creating beautiful handmade dolls and quilts that reflected her patience and artistry. She was passionate about family history and genealogy, filling books upon books with the stories and records of those who came before her. She was also a poet, author, singer, musician, and songwriter whose creativity blessed the lives of many. She loved teaching others and generously shared her talents throughout her life.
Those who knew Shirley remember her as a very special woman—kind, spirited, and wonderfully spicy. She believed with the wholehearted faith of a child, throwing herself completely into the things she loved. She had a big heart and an even bigger spirit.
Life was not always easy for Shirley. Much of her life was spent simply surviving challenges that many could never fully understand. She carried burdens that were heavy and often found herself without the protection or support she deserved. Like all of us, she made mistakes, but she also endured the mistakes and hurts of others. Through it all, she kept moving forward. It took extraordinary strength of heart to live the life she lived, and that quiet courage became one of her greatest legacies.
Shirley is survived by her sister, Katherine “Aunt Kat”, and her beloved children: Charles (Lisa), Russell (Talia), Rebeka, Laurie (Danial), Joseph, Samuel (Cammy), Benjamin (Carmen), Patrick (Amie), and Sara (Jonathan). She also leaves behind 24 grandchildren, extended family, and friends who will remember her with love.
Though her earthly journey has ended, those who loved her find comfort in knowing she is finally at peace. May she now rest free from the struggles she carried for so long, embraced by the love of her Savior and reunited with those who have gone before her.
Rest in peace, Mom.
