Sidney 'Sid' Rogers Gilligan Jr's Obituary
Sidney ‘Sid’ Rogers Gilligan Jr.,100, passed away on January 10, 2026 in Murray, Utah.
Sid was born on February 12, 1925 in the Bronx Borough of New York City and was the
only child of Sidney Rogers Gilligan and Anna Maud Carlton. The family moved to
Warren, Massachusetts during his high school years in 1941. There he met Rhoda Mary
Warfield from neighboring West Brookfield. They married after WWII in 1947.
Sid graduated from High School, enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1943 and was
ordered to active duty shortly afterward. He was then placed in the V-12 college training
program where he attended a summer session at Duke University and transferred to Purdue University, earning a BS degree in electrical engineering. He received his commission in 1946. After being honorably discharged, they moved to Hartford, Connecticut where their sons Mark, Matt and Tom were born.
In Hartford he worked for the Hartford Electric Light Company (now Northeast Utilities) in distribution engineering and later worked for General Electric Company as a sales engineer in Schenectady and Phoenix, which included international travel. He completed his career at San Diego Gas and Electric Company as a conservation engineer.
Sid and Rhoda were divorced in April 1981. Rhoda passed away in 2012 in Abilene, Texas.
Sid met and married Margaret Jeannine Campbell Lewis in Los Angeles in November 1981. They lived in San Diego, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, California, served an LDS mission in the Philippines, moved to Bedford, Wyoming for nine years and then to Murray, Utah. Jeannine passed away in June 2014 in Murray, Utah.
Sid is survived by sons Matthew (Matt) Gilligan (Heidi) and Thomas (Tom) Gilligan, Matt and Heidi’s son Colin Gilligan (Jessie) and their two children, Matt and Heidi’s daughter Erin (Brett) and their four children.
Sid is also survived by step sons and daughters Shandra Oliver, Sheila Somerville, Aleta Kim Lawton, Tim Lewis, Ann Plant (Terry), Terry Lewis (Connie) and Lisa Roblyer (Adam). He is also survived by twenty step grandchildren, and numerous step great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. Sid was preceded in death by his parents, his son Mark and step-son David Hyrum Lewis whom he diligently cared for during David’s five-year coma in San Diego, California.
A memorial is planned in the chapel of Premier Funeral Services, 67 East 8000 South, Salt Lake City, UT at 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 24, 2026. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the charity of their choice.
