I will never forget Elder Bunnell. He was my Navajo language teacher at the language training mission in Provo. I could tell that he would get somewhat frustrated trying to teach these new missionaries enough Navajo to get started once we arrived in the mission. He inspired me to continue learning new Navajo verbs each day as my two years commenced. I had never had any foreign-type language training before because the small school I was from in Idaho had a basic curriculum which didn't include any electives. Dear Bunnell Cousins,

I am so sorry that I had a conflict and couldn't make it to Utah for the memorial service and burial of your dad. I have been thinking of you all and praying for your family. I was able to read Matt's tribute which took me on a walk down memory lane. I too received some wise counsel from your dad that helped me through a very difficult time in my life when my confidence was low. I also have enjoyed looking at all the pictures. As a young girl I thought Uncle Steve was so dreamy and cool! Two of the things that stood out the most were his laugh and those dimples (which he passed on to all of you and even a couple of my siblings....just not fair)!! The main take away I got from my walk down memory lane is the pride I felt in having Bunnell blood run through my veins. Even though I don’t get to see you very often, there is a bond and a love that I feel that comes from being in the same family. Love you all!

I have known Steve since 2008. I got to know him really well when he was our ward mission leader and I served by him in a different capacity. I always loved it when he shared a thought or his testimony during meetings and in the hallway. He was my friend. I remember one special week he talked about the ROMEO club and that we were invited if we would like to attend lunch with this club. ROMEO stood for, Really Old Men Eating Out. He always made me laugh and think. I am grateful I had the opportunity to know this wonderful man. I too, loved his stories and his generous heart. We will meet again friend.

Our "Band of Brothers" has lost a great member. Steve was a great friend with a treasure trove of wisdom and quotes to fit any situation. It was sad to see Parkinson's ravage his mind and body. I'm glad that he has been released from that pain and graduated to the next phase of his life. I love you, Steve.

Steve was a beautiful man who always had a grace and humor that’s makes me smile even now. I always loved his stories, his memories, and his gift to find the poetry in every day life. His dedication to God and his church will survive him. The French have a saying that “ to leave is to die a little”. In Steve’s case, his death means that he has left for awhile, but we’ll see him again. I can’t wait to see that wry smile on his intelligent face. We’ll meet again my friend.

Only had the opportunity to talk with him a few times. The first time I talked to him he left he left me feeling great about myself and our convo. It was great to know you Dr. Bunnell now rest in peace and enjoy the ride on the other side.

Steven is an amazing person who, during the time that I’ve known him (his late wife, Karyn, is my Mom), spent his days in the service of others. He was caring, kind, and loving. He truly loved his family above all, and welcomed us in with open arms. I’ve loved knowing this man, and was honored that he chose my Mom and was absolutely the man of her dreams.
