Steven Arthur Treft's Obituary
On Tuesday, September 23, 2025, Steve quietly passed away at 71 years of age, after a brief illness with Pneumonia in Layton, Utah. He was born April 28, 1954 in Salt Lake City, but grew up in Bountiful, Utah as the third son of Leonard H. and Myrl Burch Treft.
Steve’s life was filled with adventures in the mountains and deserts of Utah to camp, fish and enjoy the great outdoors. He absolutely loved to fish, principally at Strawberry Reservoir.
He graduated from Bountiful High school in 1972. He had the distinction of seeking out adventure without thinking of the consequences of what he was about to do. This led to breaking 103 bones, rolling several vehicles and crashing on motorcycles, bicycles and living on the edge of most precipices he discovered.
Steve served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Leeds, Yorkshire, England from 1974 to 1976. He worked at Kennecott Copper Corporation and for Mountain Bell Telephone, until an accident that broke his back and several ribs led to his early retirement with a medical disability.
Steve married Karen Rose Minkler on December 24, 1983 and they brought two adventurous boys, Daniel and Bryce before they divorced a few years later. But he deeply loved his boys and spent as much time with them as he could.
Steve is preceded in death by both his parents. He is survived by his two sons, his brothers Robert L (Terrie) Treft, Howard Treft, Timothy (Valori) Treft and his sister, Susan (Scott) Olsen.
A celebration of life was celebrated by close family members in the beautiful Uintah Mountains, where many summer days were spent with his family over many years. He was remembered for his great love of teasing, laughter and great adventures in the outdoors.
