Susan Seaman Knutti's Obituary
Susan Seaman Knutti
Our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend Susan Seaman Knutti returned home to her heavenly and earthly parents on January 23, 2025. Susan was born February 10, 1946, to Reed Smoot Seaman and Mary Albertson Seaman in Cedar City, Utah. Surrounded by loved ones, she passed away peacefully in Taylorsville, Utah.
As the oldest of four sisters growing up in beautiful southern Utah, Susan had an idyllic childhood. With cousins just two doors down and other loved ones nearby, she enjoyed a close relationship with family and spoke often of the fun they enjoyed together. She had a great love of music and was often in the school orchestra, playing the violin throughout high school and college. Always a hard-working student and lifelong learner, she enjoyed working in her father’s Main Street clothing store, Smoot’s Apparel. She was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 8. Always vigilant in managing her diabetes, Susan refused to allow her condition to prevent her from living the life she wanted.
Susan graduated with a teaching degree from the College of Southern Utah (SUU) and taught elementary school for 16 years in Tooele and Granite School Districts. She enjoyed teaching and loved the opportunity to mentor children in her classrooms. Susan’s career as an educator remained a great sense of pride throughout her life and she maintained cherished relationships with some of her co-workers.
Susan met David Frank Knutti on a blind date in Salt Lake City. They were married in the St. George Temple on October 13, 1980. She maintained a great love for David and supported him in his professional pursuits. Perhaps her greatest joy was motherhood with the arrival and upbringing of two daughters, Rachel and Michelle. Though she eventually transitioned from full-time teaching, she continued her love of teaching and instruction in how she raised her daughters. It was common for Susan to enroll her young girls in learning programs like 4-H and support them in learning fundamental skills, including baking the perfect loaf of bread. As a devoted spouse and mother, she prepared a homemade dinner for her family each evening, and the cookie tins on the counter were always stocked with homemade sweets.
A faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, she was committed to her volunteer responsibilities through which she developed many valued friendships. She was committed to serving in her community, keeping up on current events and advocating for causes important to her. She also maintained a deep love for each of her six grandchildren.
Susan is survived by her husband, David, daughters Rachel (Ethan) Shumway, Michelle (Clayton) Berg, grandchildren Ty, Shawn, Eli, Luke, Tanner, and Molly, siblings Sharon, Mary Lou and Connie, and many loving cousins and other extended family. The family wishes to thank the friends, neighbors and family members who enriched Susan’s life with visits and phone calls over the last few years of her life.
Funeral services will take place Saturday, February 1, at 10 a.m. at the Latter-day Saints chapel located at 895 W. 4800 S, Taylorsville, UT. A viewing will take place Friday, January 31, from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday from 9-9:45 a.m. at the same location. Interment to follow at Memorial Redwood Cemetery.
