Tamara Jones Hinckley's Obituary
Tamara Jones Hinckley left this world for places unknown on Monday, March 4th, 2024, at the age of 74, when Thom finally came to pick her up.
Tammy was born to Rodney and Mae Jones in Salt Lake City on April 3, 1949. She was a reluctant piano prodigy and was the pianist (and later organist) for school, church, and social events for most of her life. At 23 she moved to Phoenix, Arizona to attend college and escape Utah’s frigid winters. But it was all for naught when she was promptly called to serve an LDS mission in an even colder climate: Montreal, Quebec. Upon returning from the arctic tundra of Canada, she returned to Brigham Young University to complete her degree in English. There a mutual friend introduced her to Professor Thomas Hinckley, with whom she fell “comfortably in love.” Thom and Tammy married on April 23, 1977, and she began the great adventure of step-motherhood, followed by grand-motherhood and finally motherhood. (Yes, in that order).
Tammy will be remembered for her wit, dry humor, love of the Oxford comma, and her overt competitiveness when playing card games.
She is survived by her siblings Calvin (Susan) Jones, Alda (Hoda Peterson) Jones, and Denise (Peter) Bales; her kids Sarah Hinckley and Joseph Hinckley; her step kids Nina (Bill) Kramer, Rigel (Ruth) Hinckley, and Neil Hinckley; her “spare” kids Kandy, Kimberly and Chad, and “the sideboard boys”—as well as eighteen grandkids, 2.5 great-grandkids, and countless family members related by love that call her Mom, Aunt Tammy, and Gramma.
A celebration of Tammy’s life will be held on Saturday, March 9 at 2:00 p.m. at the First Baptist Church Sanctuary, 777 South 1300 East, Salt Lake City. Everyone is invited to gather and mingle with family and friends in the Fellowship Hall directly after the service.
In lieu of flowers, in her honor, please play a hand of cards and gloat obnoxiously whether you’re winning or not…or donate to a charity of your choice.
