Verdell Ray Bishop's Obituary
Verdell Ray Bishop, Jr. passed peacefully April 24, 2024. He was born in Delta, UT, January 3, 1943. Ray was raised in Hinckley, UT by his parents, Verdell and Dana Bishop, and was the oldest of 7 children. He attended school in Hinckley and Delta, served an LDS Mission in Montana and Wyoming, and graduated from BYU with a BA in Radio and TV Communications.
His greatest accomplishment was marriage to Beverly Fullmer, August 3, 1966, in the Idaho Falls Temple and they were blessed with six children. He served in the U.S. Air Force, with Electronic training at Keesler AFB in Biloxi, MS, and as a Satellite Vehicle Director at Vandenberg AFB, Lompoc, CA. He was honorably discharged from the Air Force with the rank of Captain.
Ray had careers in radio broadcasting (KBYU-FM, KOVO, KSFI-FM aka FM-100, KEYY and KSRR aka KSTAR), and in Facilities Management with the LDS Church. He served in the Orem Kiwanis Club and the Boy Scouts of America. He was active in his Ward, serving in many callings, including Bishop of Wards in both Lompoc and Orem, and he especially enjoyed playing the organ all his life.
Ray is survived by his loving wife, Beverly; siblings Barry (Karen) Bishop, Patrice (Dean) Moody, Jon (Carol Jean) Bishop, Bruce (Roberta) Bishop, and Julie (Mike) Brame; children Scott (Vivian) Bishop, American Fork, UT; Barbie (TaSele) HoChing, Queen Creek, AZ; Jenni (Chris) Klunker, Hurricane, UT; Emily (Matt) Tippets, Manila, UT; Michelle (Neil) Bryce, Saratoga Springs, UT; and Michael (Elisabeth) Bishop, Saginaw, MI; 27 Grandchildren and 3 Great-Grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his loving parents, his younger brother, Paul, and his granddaughter, Leah.
Our family is grateful for all of those who cared for our father: Dr. Nick Thompson and his staff at Revere Oncology and at Utah Home Health & Hospice, all of the many in-home caregivers & therapists, especially Kylie Tippets and all of his cherished neighbors and friends.
Viewing will be held on Sunday, April 28, from 6:00-8:00pm and Monday, April 29, from 11:30am-12:30pm, at the Cascade 6th Ward Chapel (400 N 400 E Orem). Funeral services will be held at the chapel on Monday, April 29, at 1:00pm. Interment will follow at the Wallsburg, UT cemetery with Military honors.
