Wendy Kay Johnson Wright's Obituary
Wendy Kay Johnson Wright, 69 died peacefully at home on November 22,2024 in Sandy, Utah. She was a beloved daughter, sister, wife, teacher, and “mother” to several rescued animals in her lifetime.
Wendy was born on November 14, 1955, in Oxford, New York to Sarah Mae Simson and Harold Charles Johnson. She grew up in Oxford and graduated from Oxford Academy High School. She was chosen as a Rotary Club exchange student and spent her junior year of high school in Broken Hills, New South Wales, Australia.
After graduating from college she moved to Penobscot, Maine where she built her own house and started an alternative high school known as Reach for students in the surrounding area. She also became a very active member of the New England chapter of Border Collie Rescue Program.
She took a year off from teaching and took her grandfather on a trip across America. After its completion she moved to Utah and taught High School on the Reservation near the 4 Corners area. This is where she met her husband Charlie Wright, and they were married on Nov. 21,1992 in Maine where they settled and built their home.
Wendy and Charlie raised several animals on their homestead and fostered many rescued animals. Years later they moved to Kanab, Utah and purchased Critter Corner, a pet supply store.
Wendy loved to read, knit, and do felting and work with animals. Right up to the end of her life, she spent time working as a volunteer for the Humane Society in Murray, Utah
She was preceded in death by her mother Sarah Mae Johnson, and her brother Martin Scot Johnson, and her pets which were her “children” Sancho, George, Katie, Cassie, GiGi, Hawk, Daisy, and Blue.
She is survived by her parents Harold and Audrey Johnson, Charlie Wright (ex-husband), Joy and Anthony Huffaker (sister and brother-in-law), Gregg and Debbie Johnson (brother and sister-in-law), sister-in-law Carroll Johnson. Many nieces and nephews: Byron, Miriam and Ian Huffaker, Matthew Johnson and his wife Shannon, Erik Johnson and his wife Mary, great nieces and nephews Kylie Johnson, Madalynn Johnson, Benjamin Johnson, and Violet Johnson.
Wendy will be cremated, and her ashes will be returned to Maine per her wishes. If anyone wishes to make a donation in her memory, she asked you to donate to the New England Border Collie Rescue (NEBCR.org) or the Angel Memorial Fund at Kindred Spirits Vet. Clinic in Orrington, ME, or other local no kill animal rescue organizations.
