I came to the Y and the history department in 1995. I did not get a chance to meet Bill until much later that year given that our offices were far apart and we had different teaching schedules. Nonetheless, I found him a warm and gentle soul. We only exchanged a few conversations, and when he retired, I wished I had spent more time conversing, but I was new in the profession--though much older than the typical young faculty member would be--so I put my head down and worked. Still, it was nice having Bill in the department and I know that his legacy has continued in Native American education.
