In 1989 Linda and I were blessed to move next door to Carol and Lee Pettingill on the outskirts of Zillah, Washington. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints we were thrilled to find that many of our neighbors, including Carol and Lee, were members as well.
We soon discovered that the Pettingill’s were to become more than just neighbors and over the next 11 years they truly became a part of our family and, gratefully, they treated us a part of their family as well, sharing difficult times as well as good ones, birthdays, missionary farewells and other special events, all while serving and being served by each other.
We will celebrate our 50th anniversary as members of the church in August and we have met many wonderful Latter-day Saints who have been wonderful Christ-like examples of Christian service but never have we met anyone else like Carol. The pure love of Christ lived within her and she will always be for us the epitome of Charity.
Despite her busy life and many responsibilities, Carol was always attuned to the spirit and consistently responded to it. The number. Individuals and families she quietly served throughout her life must have numbered in the thousands and yet she never complained or sought recognition.
Her sensitivity to the spirit and willingness to go and do for others touched and improved an incredible number of lives (including ours).
When the Zillah Ward was formed I was humbled to be called, a couple of months before it was formally organized, to be the first Bishop. As I began to pray about the leaders for the ward, I received a clear impression that Carol should be called as Zillah’s first Relief Society President. She was in her late 50’s or early 60’s at the time and had previously served many, many times as a Relief Society President but the Lord knew that as president she would serve as the template for the sisters in our new ward, establishing a tradition of service that would perfectly reflect the mission of the Relief Society through charitable acts on behalf of the individuals, families and homes in our ward.....and that is exactly what she did!
Carol was an angel sent to earth, blessed with the desire to minister to the troubled, downtrodden and ill as all who loved her or knew her well can attest. We will all miss her.
Knowing Carol as we did, however, we have recognized how much and how long she has desired to be reunited with Lee, her infant daughter and her other beloved, departed family members,.
And so, we celebrate that she has now cast off the shackles that had fogged her mind in recent years and has received the reward for which a life well lived as a true disciple of Jesus Christ has qualified her. We will look forward to the time when we too may see her once again.
Our prayer is that her entire family has been comforted by their memories of her love, faith, strength and goodness.
