My husband Phil and Dan went to high school together. Before they graduated they both signed up for the military, Dan in the Navy, and Phil in the marine corps. They both got their first duty stations in millington Tennessee, while there we would all spend time at neshaminy state park by the Mississippi River. One day when we were all at this park Dan and Phil decided to go for a swim out into the Mississippi to see what it was like and quickly discovered that the current was far too strong and found themselves in a very scary situation, luckily however the two young men were fresh out of bootcamp and were in the shape their lives. In the end they made it back more or less unscathed, but they were very worn out and had narrowly missed what could have been a disaster.
After the military years, back in Utah, Dan and Phil were great hunting buddies. One day they were in Phil’s truck, an international scout, and one the men’s guns went off in the back of the truck and put a hole in the roof.
Another time, Dan had successfully hunted a moose, and the moose was so big that all four of us, me and Kathy included, got too tired carving it up that Dan decided to throw the rest in a rented freezer locker at a place called buffalo birds and finish cutting it up in the spring of the next year. Well the next spring came and he checked it out of buffalo birds and started carving it up only to be interrupted by a knock at their front door, which turned out to be the game warden. They ended up splitting us all up and questioning us individually about things, and what had turned out to be happening was that the game warden found out from buffalo birds about the moose and thought that Dan had shot a moose recently and that he had done so illegally. It turned out to be a funny situation.
Phil and I really enjoyed a lot of hunting, fishing, and camping trips with Dan and Kathy. I will always treasure those memories forever. - Cathy Fullmer
