Earl Daniel Dake's Obituary
Earl Daniel (Dan) Dake passed away quietly in his home in Sandy, Utah February 3, 2023 surrounded by his wife of 69 years Nadine and children Dana, Tim, and Chris.
Dan was born in Rapid City, South Dakota in 1931 to Earl and Grezelda Dake. Following high school Dan served in the US Army Corp of Engineers in Europe then returned home where he married Nadine Holthaus of Rapid City. He attended South Dakota School of Mines and Technology where he earned a degree in Civil Engineering in 1955. Dan was selected by the Bureau of Public Roads to enter their training program where he earned a master’s degree in City Planning from Yale University in 1961.
Dan had a distinguished career with the Bureau of Public Roads/Federal Highway Administration during the planning and construction of the Interstate Highway System. His work carried him throughout the United States where he worked with ten state highway departments and several universities on a full spectrum of highway research and design projects. Dan’s career took him to Bolivia to develop a highway planning program as well as Pakistan and Turkey to develop and support highway planning standards and legislation.
Dan enjoyed being outdoors hiking, camping, and especially skiing, and was a member of the Wild Old Bunch at Alta ski area. He shared that enjoyment with his children and grandchildren into his 80s when he hung up his skis for the last time.
